Mizuno MP-18 blade
In a digital world where everything’s designed on computers it’s not often you hear a brand say we’re taking a step back, and using a craftsmans eyes and hands over a computer. But it’s exactly what Mizuno have done with their latest MP-18 blade.
They reckon they’ve listened to blade purists and reverted back to using their best Japanese craftsman “Turbo” to come up with a pure blade, with a shaping a computer could never quite grasp. Over the years “Turbos” worked with legendary ball strikers like Faldo, Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle, and all three of them have gone onto win major championships playing the irons “Turbo” created for them.
Nick Faldo has played a role in designing the new MP-18’s and Mizuno say the heads are thinner, smaller and shorter than their recent iron launches which obviously means the muscle-backs are tailored specifically to seriously good ball strikers. Mizuno reckon the MP-18’s are a throwback to blades of Mizuno’s past. Each head is Grain Flow Forged from 1025E mild steel and thanks to the concentrated grain structure you can expect very precise shot feedback and control.
Mizuno MP-18 SC (split cavity) and MMC (multi-material cavity)
The blade market is always going to be niche as less than 5% of golfers have a low single figure handicap. But Mizuno reckon by including a small cavity back MP-18 SC and a MMC (multi-material cavity) model in the same range (think titanium cavity and 20g of tungsten of toe weighting), all of which can be bought independently serious golfers will be able to create their ultimate set.
Expect to see the MP-18 three set range arriving in golf shops in August 2017. Price’s start from £135 per iron (MP-18 and MP-18 SC) and rise to £150 per iron for the MP-18 MMC. For more information visit golf.mizunoeurope.com.
There’s new MP-18 Fli-Hi players long irons too…
The MP-18 MMC Fli-Hi are the finishing touch to the new MP-18 family. It’s a long iron replacement and widely used on tour, as it offers a higher ball flight from long range and steeper landing angles. A sleek new profile, lightweight maraging steel face, 20g tungsten toe weight and internal pocket enhance ball speed and playability, whilst the top edge is just 1mm wider than the corresponding MP-18 blade. The MMC Fli-Hi are availble from #2 – #5 iron with a £150 RRP. For further information visit golf.mizunoeurope.com
