TaylorMade reveal new M2 Iron

It’s always a major challenge for club designers to create game improving irons which look the bees knees. Why? Well because game improvement tech in its very nature comes in the form of chunky wide areas of weight that help counteract your mishits. And lets be honest its not often you come across a chunky, lumpy bumpy super model that looks amazing!

We reckon this is all set to change in 2016. Ping have already launched their best looking game improvement iron ever in the form of the G and now TaylorMade are following suit with the cracking new M2. We’ve heard other designers say how modern irons are being created much more like woods and Taylormade are saying the M2 allows them to combine metalwood-like launch with exceptional shot height, control and feel…this is how.

Fluted Hosel

Taylormade’s boffins reckon traditional iron designs have lots of weight trapped in the hosel which if freed up can be put to much better use elsewhere in the head to better improve your performance. Their solution is a new fluted hosel which removes weight from the ineffective hosel area and redistributes it lower and further back in the sole. Helping not only increase MOI performance but also helping create what Taylormade are calling a high peak trajectory…which should help you carry shots further.

360deg Undercut

Modern irons are all about creating and improving face flex and different brands go about it in different ways. The M2 combines an advanced topline construction with a 360deg undercut along with an unsupported face and speed pocket technology to maximise face flex and rebound. The face is incredibly thin at the top and bottom and the company use their Inverted Cone Technology in the centre to maximise flex, rebound and ball speeds.

3d badge

A few years ago iron badges were just that, badges that were stuck into an irons cavity to improve cosmetics. For Taylormade that’s all changed as their latest iron designs are using badges as fully functioning parts of the club. TaylorMade reckon the M2’s badge thanks to its multi-material struts help manage sound and feel along with dampening vibration. The badge does this by being extremely stiff but without inhibiting face flex and ball speed…which TaylorMade are keen to point out has taken some serious engineering.

Top game improvement shape

We’ve seen a million and one game improvement irons before. Not many have been a good looking shape that a large majority of golfers want to put into play. Well we can confidently say the M2 are different. The head shape is not stupidly huge, the soles are not too wide and there aren’t any lumps or bumps where they shouldn’t be, in-fact its perfect for a huge audience of golfers.

 M2 Tour Iron

As good as the M2 iron is TaylorMade feel they need to back it up with a Tour version too. The Tour offers distance players the opportunity to add workability into the mix as a distance players iron. The head differences run to size, shape, offset, topline and sole widths so basically the Tour is very much its own model. It’s well suited to golfers who enjoy game improvement distance with the look and workability of a players iron.
