Wentworth’s East Course is getting a revamp by European Golf Design, plus a new Academy with a par-3 course

Wentworth Club has revealed an extensive design project that will see Harry Colt’s original East Course reimagined, and the introduction of a cutting-edge Golf Academy.

Wentworth is perhaps best known for hosting the BMW PGA Championship every year, but the club has two other fantastic courses, the East and the Edinburgh. Wentworth’s East Course is still considered one of the UK’s finest inland courses. Renowned for its intimate setting and vibrant heather, it remains visually striking year-round. The course weaves between fairways guarded by dense woodlands. Despite being a short 6,200 yards from the back tees, its demand for precision keeps even elite ball strikers on their toes.

After research into the East Course’s history, European Golf Design (EGD), in collaboration with Wentworth Club’s senior management, is leading a project to restore the par-68 course to its heathland origins. The refreshed course will provide an engaging challenge for golfers of all levels.

The project, which is already underway, will focus on respecting and restoring Harry Colt’s original design principles. Colt is known for designing some of the best golf courses in England, including Sunningdale, St George’s Hill and the redesign of the Hotchkin at Woodhall Spa.

Extensive bunker reshaping and remoulding will result in the combination of several of the course’s sand traps. Some of the green complexes and fairways will also be redefined, while a woodland management program will improve the landscape, aligning with the club’s sustainability goals.

In a bid to invest in grassroots golf, Wentworth’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Golf Academy will offer three indoor teaching studios, a putting studio, an outdoor short-game area, and a café with outdoor seating. It will also feature the latest game-improvement technology. The Academy will be designed as a serene space, complemented by nine additional outdoor hitting bays.

The Academy, which is being created with all golfers in mind, will elevate Wentworth’s facilities to a new standard, offering players of all ages and skill levels a clear path to progress from novice to elite. A new Par 3 Course will also be constructed, designed to meet World Handicap System standards, making it ideal for beginners seeking their first handicap and experienced players perfecting their short game.

An artists impression of the Wentworth Academy

Stuart Boyle, Club Manager at Wentworth, said: “We are committed to providing a world-class offering for our members, creating a golf and country club experience which is cherished and admired the world over.

“The Club is looking firmly to the future, while building on its distinguished heritage, as it strives to create a welcoming and friendly experience which prizes the family dynamic and creates pathways for future generations of golfers.

“The renovation work on the East Course is a clear sign as we continue to strive to make a classic heathland test even greater while recognising the original roots that have made the layout so iconic. Meanwhile, the development of our new Golf Academy will only enhance the golf offering we have at Wentworth.”
