Mizuno JPX-800 irons
Last updated:
RRP: £75 per club (s), £100 (g)
LOFTS: 6-iron: 28, PW: 44
TECH TALK Mizuno developed a thin face using a new manufacturing process that increases the steel’s strength. A pocket cavity with an external bar expands the sweetspot on this cast club. Short irons (8-iron through PW) are designed with a deep-pocket cavity for forgiveness.
PLAYER COMMENTS
L “These perform well, but it’s somewhat annoying to see part of the back cavity at address.” … “As good a cast club as I’ve ever hit. It has a medium-high ball flight that is workable and repeatable.”
M “The sole on this club is tremendous. You can come into the ball steep and still get through it.”
HOT The JPX-800 is an attempt by Mizuno to go beyond its “players’ iron” heritage, and the company has succeeded. The iron has plenty of pop and more than a hint of forgiveness. The designers have done a nice job of hiding the offset, too.
NOT Mizuno has established a high standard over the years for the sound and feel of its irons. This one, however, falls a little short.
