Cobra S3 irons

RRP: £499

LOFTS: 6-iron: 28, PW: 44

TECH TALK A high-strength alloy is used in the face of the long and middle irons. The idea is to create a thin face that improves ball speed through springlike effect. Polymer inside the topline and a full-cavity thermoplastic-urethane badge dampen vibration. Available in an all-iron set and an iron-hybrid set.

PLAYER COMMENTS

L “Unlike a lot of offset clubs, you can open this one easily. It doesn’t hood. The back of the iron is ugly, but it looks good at address.” … “The ball shoots up in the air and hangs forever. High-handicappers are going to love these; they’re so confidence-inspiring.”

M “The sweetspot felt small, but the ball flight was controllable.”

HOT The stepped-sole design (in which the toe and heel areas are raised) prevents the club from twisting while sliding through the grass, a plus for mid-handicappers. The two-tone face frames the ball as well as any iron.

NOT That said, let’s do away with the all-iron set. We shouldn’t be encouraging anyone to hit 19-degree 3-irons.
