Golf Maintenance Month is running throughout April at golfclubs4cash, and it’s the perfect time to give your clubs a spring MOT.
During the month, golfclubs4cash stores will be offering tips and help in-store to help you get the best out of the equipment you already own – to help you play better and to make your equipment last longer.
Sustainability is at the heart of the golfclubs4cash Golf Maintenance Month. By looking after the kit you have now, you’ll not only save money in the long term, it will slash the number of products that end up in landfill, creating significant carbon savings.
The second-hand club experts at golfclubs4cash, plus the TG team, have come up with 30 ways you can enhance your existing set-up and play better golf. Some you can do at home, some you’ll need expert advice for – so drop in at one of the golfclubs4cash stores in Warrington or Edinburgh, where you can also get an expert to check your lofts and lies, check for damaged hosels and shafts, or worn grips – all of which will hurt your scores this spring.
Keep your clubs clean
Clearing any muck off your golf clubs means you get optimum performance on every shot and extends their lifespan. Check out our full guide to the easiest way to clean your golf clubs.
Extend the life of your grips
When you clean your clubs, don’t forget to do the grips too. Over time, they will have a build-up of sweat and oils from your hands, plus reside from suntan lotion, sand, dirt, mud, grass, and even food and drink. This will reduce the level of grip on offer, causing you to have less control over the club and/or grip it tighter than you would normally.
Don’t forget to clean your putter
Many golfers forget to look after their putter when they clean the rest of their clubs. Modern day putters have grooves which can become filled with dirt and affect performance. Keeping your putter nice and clean will also help any alignment aids really stand out and do their job properly.
Always use your putter headcover
As well as keeping it clean, protect your putter by ensuring you always use its headcover. Any scratches or dings can affect performance and distract you when you’re standing over a putt.
If you’ve lost your headcover, don’t just leave your putter exposed to the elements. golclubs4cash have a wide range of headcovers available.
Replace all your grips at once
Your grips will generally wear out across the whole set anyway, but even if some are looking more worn than others, it is best to replace them all at once in order to get consistent feel on every shot. Going from a fresh and tacky grip on one shot to a worn out one the next is not going to help your consistency!
Golfclubs4cash are offering free fitting when you purchase any of their 14-grip package deals, with budget, standard and premium options available.
How often to replace your grips
We recommend that you change your grips roughly every 50 rounds. By that time, the compound in the rubber will be breaking down due to the sweat in your hands and the weather conditions.
Look out for hosel damage
Check your hosels aren’t damaged and the ferrules haven’t moved or come loose. golfclubs4cash offer a repair service to get your clubs as good as new.
Check your shafts
Even the smallest bend, kink or dent in the shaft can affect the way the club performs.
Check yours by examining them with your eyes and running your fingers along them to check for any imperfections. golfclubs4cash offer a repair service if any of your shafts are damaged.
Get a pre-season MOT
The start of the golf season is the perfect time to ensure all of your gear is in good nick and performing as it should. golfclubs4cash‘s equipment experts offer a full bag check in-store which can highlight any issues or give you peace of mind that you’re good to go for the season.
Get your lofts and lies checked
Many golfers don’t realise that the loft and lie angle of their clubs can change over time due to the impact when hitting shots. The lofts can become weaker, costing you distance, while the wrong lie angle can make shots go offline.
It’s quick and easy to get your lofts and lie angles checked at golfclubs4cash, and they can adjust them if any of them have moved from where they should be.
Are your clubs the right length?
If you weren’t custom fitted for your clubs, if you got them as a kid and you’ve grown since, or if your setup has changed since you got them, you might find that your clubs aren’t the right length.
golfclubs4cash offer an in-store service to check if your clubs are the right length and can shorten or lengthen them as necessary.
Bring your clubs indoors
Leaving your clubs in the car might seem convenient but it does them no good, particularly if it gets particularly hot or cold. Bringing them indoors means they’ll be stored at a better temperature, and it’s safer too. It also increases the likelihood of you deciding to give them a good clean…
Clean your grooves
Grooves that are clogged with mud, grass and/or sand don’t perform properly, resulting in lower spin and inconsistent distances. A toothbrush or specialist groove-cleaning tool used with warm, soapy water will get the grooves clean and doing their job.
Sharpen your grooves
We’ve seen the data that shows how different brand new grooves perform compared to grooves that have seen a lot of action. If you’ve ever bought new wedges, you’ll probably have noticed how much more spin they generated than your old ones. A groove-sharpening tool is a relatively cheap way to get your old grooves somewhere near the performance they offered when they were brand new.
Be careful putting clubs in your bag… and check your bag isn’t damaging your clubs
Slamming your clubs back into your bag after a poor shot isn’t a good look and it can actually damage them. The heads can clatter against one another, causing annoying dings which can distract you and will devalue your clubs if you ever come to sell them, and the shafts can take a bash too.
It’s also worth checking the top of your bag and the dividers as if these are worn out they can damage the shafts of your golf clubs.
Be kind to your clubs
That bad shot you just hit wasn’t actually your club’s fault, was it? Throwing or slamming a club isn’t a habit you want to get into. It doesn’t make you a great person to play with, and you can easily damage a club which will prove to be an expensive moment of rage. We’ve even seen people accidentally hit a playing partner with a thrown club – just don’t take the risk!
Check your driver settings
If you weren’t custom fitted for your driver and you have never changed the settings, there’s every chance it’s not set up in the way that’s best suited to your swing. The gear experts at golfclubs4cash can check it for you and make any tweaks that will help you get more from your drive.
And your fairway woods
The same applies to fairway woods (and any adjustable hybrids, etc). Tweaking the loft and shot shape settings can make huge changes to ball flight – without you having to do anything differently with your swing!
Clean your golf bag
Given your bag a good scrub with warm, soapy water will keep it looking fresh and extend its lifespan.
Keep your clubs dry
Water plus metal is not a good combination! Use your bag’s rain hood when it’s raining and make sure you dry your clubs straight after the round – letting them stay wet is a recipe for rusting.
Time for a new glove?
A worn-out glove won’t help you grip as well, which will likely lead to you gripping the club tighter which can reduce distance and accuracy.
Don’t let sand sit on your wedges
Hitting a shot with sand on your club causes abrasion that will wear out the metal much faster. Wet sand will cause rusting, too.
Make sure you give your wedge a thorough clean after every bunker shot.
Regularly empty your golf bag
No one wants to discover a mouldy banana from three years ago! You’ll also be surprised how much detritus accumulates in the pockets of your bag over time – and how much lighter it feels when you take it all out!
