Plenty of golfers will have heard of golf in the Algarve or even had the luxury of enjoying golf in the Algarve. But what if Portugal has more to offer? Fancy combining the best elements of a lively city break with playing some incredible bucket list golf courses? Then the answer could very well be the Portuguese capital of Lisbon

Whether you want to spend a week in a secluded five-star golf resort enjoying some of the country’s finest golfing experiences or dividing your time between the course and downtown Lisbon taking in some of the city’s rich cultural sites, vibrant nightlife, and amazing eateries – you can do either in this incredibly versatile destination.

In order to help you choose your next Portuguese golf destination we take a look at the best way to do a golf holiday in Lisbon.

West Cliffs

Praia D’El Rey Golf Resort

Situated close-to 60 miles north of Lisbon city center is Praia D’El Rey Golf Resort. This is one of the most well-known golf resorts in the region thanks to the quality of both on-site courses – Praia D’El Rey and the more recently developed West Cliffs. Both courses offer spectacular coastal views from their clifftop location. With extensive accommodation, there is an option for every budget. You can stay in a self-catering apartment or villa, or in the five-star on-site Marriott hotel

Royal Obidos

Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort

Golf holidays aren’t all about golf, you also need a luxurious place to relax – right? The five-star boutique hotel at Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort is an amazing place to kick back after a round, especially by enjoying the incredible spa facilities. The golf course here was designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros and is only five minutes away from the aforementioned Praia D’El Rey Golf Resort. With this, you have the option of playing rounds on a variety of courses.

Dolce CampoReal Lisboa

Dolce CampoReal Lisboa

A golf course closer to Lisbon’s city center and the airport than those above is Dole CampoReal Lisboa. Despite being closer to the city the tranquility and serenity is not lost, surrounded by the protected landscape of Socorro and Archeira mountains. This five-star resort has an 18-hole golf course on-site, four bars and restaurants, tennis courts, a spa, and no fewer than three swimming pools (one of which is indoor and heated). This five-star retreat has everything you need to relax and unwind away from the fairways.

Montado Hotel & Golf Resort

Located South East of the city center, close to Setubal, Montado Hotel & Golf Resort is a secluded resort with an on-site 18-hole golf course. This par 72 course stretches 6962 yards (6366 meters) and is characterized by its large greens making it ideal for golfers of all abilities.

Penha Longa Resort

Situated west of Lisbon’s city center, in between Sintra and Cascais, this incredible five-star golf and spa resort is located in a beautiful National Park and doesn’t disappoint! Penha Longa Resort features two courses, the pick is the Atlantic Championship course which is a Robert Trent Jone Jnr design and played host to the 1994 Portuguese Open. As well as fantastic golf, there is a wide range of facilities including a full-service spa, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gymnasium, and arguably the best collection of restaurants in Portugal under one roof. There are nine in total including Michelin-starred LAB by Sergi Arola and the Japanese-inspired Midori.

Estoril Golf

Hotel Palacio Estoril

Okay, so we have cheated a little here! Not strictly a golf resort as the course is off-site but an incredibly luxurious five-star hotel in Estoril with easy access to the Par 69 18-hole Estoril Golf via a complimentary shuttle service. This grand hotel has hosted many famous guests over the years including various esteemed members of European Royalty. The hotel has appeared on the big screen itself, featuring in the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.

Getting There

Lisbon is incredibly accessible from most of the UK’s main airports such as Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow International, Bristol, London Heathrow, London Stansted, London Gatwick, and London Luton. A year-round flight schedule is served by a number of airlines including TAP, EasyJet, British Airways, and Ryanair. Flight times from the UK vary between 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on where you fly from, making this the ideal destination for a long weekend or a last-minute getaway.

There's plenty to do in Lisbon alongside golf

Off The Course

There is so much to see and do in and around this beautiful city that it’s difficult to pack it all into one trip! On our list of absolute must-dos is taking the time to venture up the steps to Castelo de São Jorge. Dating back to at least the 8th Century B.C., it proudly perches on a hill in the center of Lisbon overlooking the city below.

Just outside the city, approx. 30 minutes North West of Lisbon on the Portuguese Riviera, is the UNESCO-listed historic town of Sintra. Littered with incredible architecture from various ages, there are so many colorful enchanted castles that make it such a unique experience and somewhere which will definitely give you some fantastic holiday photos!

Finally, suppose you choose not to stay in either of the stunning coastal towns of Cascais or Estoril, we definitely recommend visiting them both – they are located next to each other west along the coast so you could walk between them in 45 minutes. You can access both towns via direct train from Lisbon city center which only takes around 40 minutes. Here you’ll find beautiful beaches and a marina with cafes and restaurants littered around them in Cascais, whilst Estoril is home to the infamous Casino Estoril which was an inspiration for Ian Fleming (author of James Bond).
