What’s In The Bag: Henrik Stenson

What’s In The Bag of former Open champion and LIV Golf star Henrik Stenson?

It’s been a headline-grabbing time for Henrik Stenson. Having been appointed Europe’s Ryder Cup captain in March, the 46-year-old was stripped of the role in July after breaching his contract by making the move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series.

Predictably, Stenson then won on his LIV Golf debut at Trump National Bedminster for his first victory since the 2019 Hero World Challenge.

Speaking after his win, Stenson joked about the controversy around his dismissal by Team Europe.

“I guess we can agree I played like a captain,” he said. “It’s been a good first week obviously. Nice to be here with the guys getting a feel for it. It’s been a busy 10 days and I’m extremely proud I managed to finish as well as I did.

“I think there might have been a little bit of extra motivation in there this week. When we as players have that, I think we can bring out the good stuff.”

Henrik Stenson will captain Europe at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

While this victory gave Stenson his biggest-ever pay day, it’s his sole Major victory which will forever be enshrined into golfing folklore.

Royal Troon hosted the 2016 Open as Stenson and Phil Mickelson went toe-to-toe in the final round, shooting a combined 14-under-par. Third-placed JB Holmes was 11 shots behind the American while the Swedish star was a further three shots further ahead. Three years earlier Stenson finished runner-up to Mickleson at Muirfield.
