Golf shoes are officially cool these days, following an astronomical rise in sport-style shoes.

Nike have unsurprisingly been at the forefront, but we really began to purr earlier this year when we were told the shoes Tiger Woods had been wearing would be made available to the masses.

I’ve had these on my feet for four rounds now, and the interest from playing partners has been immense – Nike certainly got it right with the styling.

Yes, it’s a sporty-looking shoe but it does still resemble a golf shoe, which traditionalists will clearly like. But quite frankly, while the aesthetics and the design is important, I’ve never been too fashion-conscious with shoes.

It’s all about getting a comfortable product, and the TW13 shoes have that glorious quality in abundance. There is no desire to rush off the course and pull the shoes from aching feet. Even after playing two rounds back-to-back they were brilliant. Nike have used technologies and expertise gathered from other sports to create these shoes, and you can feel it. These are as comfortable as any trainer would be,yet deliver sensational stability.

The price might put people off – £150 is a sizeable outlay – but in my experience, Nike shoes are built to last.

Ten months after Tiger Woods was spotted wearing new prototype shoes, Nike Golf are set to launch the impressive new TW13 to the golf market.

When you’re a 14-time Major winner, everything you do is under close scrutiny, and this includes any equipment changes – but the new shoes aren’t just a cosmetic upgrade of a previous golf product. They are in fact the combinations of various innovations including Nike’s FREE technology that was a natural motion system designed to mimic and conform to an athlete’s natural motion of the foot.

Tobie Hatfield, one of the Directors at Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, takes up the story.
“This will help give Tiger greater stability as he addresses the ball. The freedom of movement that natural motion technology delivers will also allow more power to be released through the swing rather than through the body, which can happen when your feet are too static,” he said.

But what does Nike’s main man think about the new product? “I love the feel of Nike FREE for training, so I asked Tobie if it was possible to bring that technology to the golf course. It’s exciting to see a conversation like that come to life. These shoes provide freedom of movement and allow me to release more power through my
swing,” added Woods.

The TW13 shoe is a brilliant example of how Nike Golf engineers use various
technologies that have proven to work well in other sports and make them work
for golfers. Not only have they incorporated the FREE technology that was first designed in 2004, they have drawn their expertise from a range of differing disciplines.

The majority of the TW13 upper, for example, consists of a coated stretch fabric which was also prevalent in Nike’s Hyperfuse basketball shoe. Part of the heel has been created from recycled Nike Air Max running shoes which make the textile material strong, as well as breathable.

The TW13s will have an RRP of £150. Not cheap, but you do get a lot of
technology for your money.
