What we say...
Wilson are set to capitalise on the success of their top player Padraig Harrington in 2009, starting with the excellent Wilson TW9 wedge.
The TW9 was a bit like Kevin Pietersen – great performer for the most part – but with a few vital flaws.
It looked good and everyone liked the consistency of strike as well as the performance on pitches and chips.
Bit pro Tom struggled to get good backspin or distance. Distance isn’t key when buying a wedge, but it’s worth considering how it fits in with the rest of your set.
A lower than expected spin-rate also counted against it – great around the greens, more suspect further afield.
Lofts: 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60
Marks out of 5
Backspin: 3, Carry: 3, Looks: 4, Feel: 3.9, Consistent Strike: 4.1, 65-yard test: 3, Around the green: 4.1
Developed in association with Padraig Harrington, the Wilson Staff Tw9 wedges combine exceptional feel and forgiveness with an innovative ‘gapping’ approach to distance control.
Tour-milled grooves for shot-stopping spin from precise distances are cut into each new wedge. New, lower-lofted cavity back options bridge the gap between the modern pitiching wedge and the sand wedge, for improved gapping.
The 60°, 58°, 56°, 54°, 52° loft options feature tour-preferred shapes with smaller heads. The 48° and 50° loft options feature a slightly larger, cavity-back with the same playability of a player's blade.
The elastomeric coating in the milled recessed areas ensures a softer impact across the entire face of the wedge. Available in satin or black PVD anti-glare finish.
