What we say...

If these Wilson wedges look like they don’t quite match, that’s because they don’t! The sand wedge here is not from the usual range but is a production version of a club made especially for Wilson staffer Padraig Harrington to his exact specifications, while the gap wedge is from their 2004 range of Gun Metal wedges (which also includes sand and lob wedges).  Padraig, ranked in the world’s top 10, uses his club from turf as much as sand, which just goes to show the versatility (and importance) of these clubs in the modern game.

We liked these clubs quite a bit. With a distinctive ‘Wilson’ look, they proved business-like and easy to hit. The gap wedge has only 3 degrees of bounce, which makes it very handy from tight lies, and it also shows quite a bit of offset, which help less-than-crack chippers keep their hands ahead of the ball (and may upset golfing purists along the way).

The sand wedge is right in the middle of the friendly-through-scary spectrum, being big enough to give you confidence in a deep greenside bunker but not so vast that professional (like Padraig) would think he was wielding a big spade. The feel, too, is somewhere in the middle – not super-soft, but not fire stinging either.

Verdict: Like many Wilson clubs, their wedges are middle-of-the-road in all the best senses of the term. They are honest, reliable and understandably popular.
