What we say...

TaylorMade’s rac brand has expanded rapidly to include sets of irons for players of every conceivable standard and how it has wedges in no fewer than four different finishes. So if you like the shape and feel to these, but don’t like the latest ‘Satin’ look (reminiscent of brushed steel), don’t despair as you also have the choice of regular chrome, black and FE203 (a dark coppery colour designed to rust over time).

TaylorMade’s powerful presence on Tour ensures there is plenty of pro endorsement for the rac wedges and it’s easy to see why players like Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia and Darren Clarke are happy to use them. These are attractive, uncomplicated wedges that do exactly what they’re asked. They extricate you from bunkers without they’re asked. They extricate you from bunkers without fuss, feel comfortable to use around the green and offer consistent distance on approach shots.

Our testing team did feel, however, that these might be clubs ideally suited to better players. Despite TaylorMade’s assertions that the two ‘pockets’ in the back of the head soften the feel, we still experienced a sharp feel at impact. This suggests these wedges are clubs for confident, competent golfers looking for pinpoint accuracy and plenty of feedback on the quality of their strikes. We love the soft grips, though.

Verdict: Unfussy bladed wedges that are used by some of the world’s top players. High handicappers might find friendlier options.
