What we say...

One of the interesting things about carrying out tests like these is to see how the ‘personalities’ of the clubs emerge. You start off with a big bunch of wedges that look more or less the same, but over the hours of bunker shots, chip-and-runs, pitches and full swings, they gradually separate out into different camps.

These good-looking wedges from Snake Eyes are on the ‘friendly’ team, alongside the clubs from Callaway and Ping, as opposed to the brusque, business-like lot, headed by TaylorMade and Titleist.

The Snake Eyes club heads are large and confidence inducing, with rounded leading edges (on both clubs, but particularly on the sand wedge) that are designed to cut easily under the ball. Our testers also liked the oversized hitting area created by extending the grooves further into the toe than on most clubs.

With a soft, forged feel at impact and very consistent distance on full shots, these wedges are of sufficiently higher quality to impress good players while staying playable enough for most high handicappers.

The gap wedge was a little shorter than most on test (and perhaps a yard or two closer to the sand wedge that is strictly ideal), but, as we point out elsewhere, length should come a long way second to consistency when you’re choosing a wedge.
