What we say...

The new PXG 0311 Sugar Daddy is golf’s only 100% CNC Milled wedge.

Ever since Scotty Cameron started crafting super premium milled putters in 1992, golf aficionados have put 100% CNC milling on a pedestal for being the ultimate way to make a premium putter.

The machining method means tolerances are much tighter, so you get a more precise end product and engineers can position mass extremely accurately.

Until PXG came along though, 100% CNC milling – which literally means the whole head is machine cut from a single block of steel (hosel and all), has been limited to putters, primarily because of the cost and complexity of making wedges or irons (which have few flat surfaces) on a CNC machine. But the guys at PXG don’t worry about cost – so they’re the first to create CNC milled wedges and irons.

It’s no doubt taken a huge amount of time, a heck of a lot of head-scratching and a huge investment out of owner Bob Parsons pocket to figure out how to make such a complex head shape on a milling machine. Think about it – the rounded head, every curve/radi, hosel and sole shape is created from a computer CAD file. And because the head’s only got one flat surface (the face) that’s a hugely impressive feat.

As with most things PXG, the 100% CNC Milled 0311 wedge is a luxury, premium product, so they come with a suitably impressive price tag. Many will never be able to justify their cost but if you’re a stickler for accuracy and precision you won’t find a more accurately made wedge on the market. Here’s how they do it.

What you need to know about the PXG 0311 Milled wedges

100% CNC Milled

The 0311 wedges are CNC Milled from 8620 steel, PXG say the ‘soft’ alloys strength to hardness ratio is perfect for prolonging the life of groove edges and ensures the finish wears well over a longer period.

PXG start with an oversized blank that’s hit by the forge 3 times. Then every sole, face, leading edge radii and profile is CNC Milled, which eliminates inconsistency from head to head, and means the 0311 is the most precise wedge on the market. It means no critical detail is ever over polished by a human hand.

Extreme high toe and perimeter weighting

PXG use titanium, steel and tungsten weights (light weight, mid-weight and dense heavy mass) in way’s other brands can only dream of. When you’re designing without the restriction of cost focus is poured on whatever material improves performance and that’s exactly what the 0311 Sugar Daddy’s perimeter weight set-up does.

Lightweight titanium weights low in the head remove inefficient mass and allow it to be repositioned high on the toe in five heavy tungsten screws. The idea is the extra mass draws the centre of gravity higher in the blade and towards the centre of the face which increases spin and improves playability when golfers open the club face for more delicate shots.

On the edge

PXG might be the first to 100% CNC Mill wedges and irons, they aren’t though the first to CNC Mill wedge faces and grooves. Thanks to their expertise in the field they reckon they’re able to push groove radii tolerances tighter than ever to the edge of the rules. What does it mean to you? Try greater spin and control.

Take your choice

Some brands like making selecting wedges as complicated as hell, but PXG like to keep things pretty simple, whilst offering choice. Sole grind shape and bounce is fixed for everything but the lofts where golfers typically like to experiment, and that’s the 58° and 60°.

The 58/09 and 60/09 have a traditional versatile sole design that performs well from all types of grass and sand. Where the 58/07 and 60/07 have narrower soles which are optimised for golfers who hit a lot of open face chip and pitch shots, especially from tight turf conditions.

As brilliant as 100% CNC Milled wedges are PXG are well aware they’re out of reach for lots of golfers, so they also make a more traditional 0311 Forged wedge too. See below.

Verdict: PXG 0311 CNC Milled wedge

This is the only 100% CNC milled wedge we’ve ever tested – the head and hosel are all created from a single piece of steel. If you accept CNC milling is the ultimate way to make a club (removing the inconsistencies of hand finishing) it really is the best and most precise wedge available.

Prohibitively expensive, yes, but without knowing the cost, our test pro had the 0311 as one of his favourite wedges of 2021. If you can justify over £355 on a wedge the 0311 CNC Milled are just gorgeous.

What you need to know about the PXG 0311 Forged wedge

Just like the 0311 Milled the head is forged three times from 8620 steel. PXG’s signature back weighting removes inefficient weight which allows for a decent degree of high toe weighting. You get precision milled grooves just like the Milled wedge and a versatile sole shape with bounce that’s designed to perform in all conditions.
