Tested: May 2011
It seems like a long time since we did our last wedge test – in fact, it was about 16 months ago and as you’d expect a lot of new models have appeared on the market in that period. One of these is Ping’s new Tour-S model, which is a new and improved version of the Tour-W wedge that proved so massively popular.
And like their G15 driver improving on the previous G10, the new wedge might just be even better than the old model – something we didn’t think could happen. A very traditional headshape makes it a winner in the eayes of seasoned players as well as weekend golfers, and the Custom Tuning Port increases perimeter weighting for added forgiveness.
When it came to the lads’ assessment of the club, the quartet was full of praise for the Tour-S. Mike summed it up eloquently when he talked about the great feel and weight of the new club, and Chris suggested the new product took up where Ping’s previous excellent offering had left off. Chris was also incredibily accurate with the wedge, firing his shots to an average of just 3.5 yards from the pin.
In terms of feel and sound, the test team all scored the wedge highly, and it performed well from near the green and the 75-yard target. One final thing to consider – Chris generated more spin with this than any other wedge – if you want lots of control and a classy product in your bag, take a good look at this stunning piece of kit.
Results (out of 5):
Spin (56 degrees from 75 yards): 8,396 rpm Looks: 4.5 Feel: 4.8 Sound: 4.8 Around the green: 4.5 75 yards: 4.5 Overall rating: 4.5
How much technology is it possible to pack into the compact head of a wedge? Lots, according to Ping. As well as featuring the usual technologies such as a machined face, maximum conforming grooves and a cleverly-designed sole for maximum versatility it also includes something called a Custom Tuning Port.
An insert in the rear of the head, it increases perimeter weighting for added forgiveness. But who would need forgiveness in a wedge? The fact Ping’s Tour players such as Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez all place their trust in the Tour-S indicates even the world’s best like a bit of help.
