2013 Wedges Test

Very pleasing to the eye, the no-nonsense head shape, compact size and large number of grooves (22 in all) appealed to all four. James felt the rounded top edge was an acquired taste and the large toe meant the grooves didn’t appear centred. He and Joel agreed the sleek design was confidence-inspiring and that it went through mid-length grass and sand with little fuss. The tight leading edge meant opening the face had little effect on the lie.

James said the 52° had plenty of spin, grabbing on the first bounce, while Kit said he got bundles of spin from the sand. He and Joel noted the heavier swing weight but overall, the consensus was this was a brilliant package. Our test team preferred the dark chrome finish over the copper finish.

2012 Review

Wedge expert Roger Cleveland has been designing for Callaway since 1996. His latest creation is the Callaway Forged wedge and our test team thought he had hit the nail on the head perfectly with the design – scoring a perfect five out of five from all six testers for versatility.

Phil wasn’t immediately taken by the copper finish but liked the dark chrome and elsewhere gave the Forged full marks, commenting on excellent feel. Steve agreed on the copper finish but loved the dark chrome and said he was impressed by how quickly the ball checked, even on shorter shots.

Roy was immediately taken with the Forged and said he would happily put this straight in the bag such was the feel and versatility. He loved the gentle feel off the face and said it really inspired confidence and allowed him to strike the ball with more conviction. David said the 21-groove pattern – the most of any major wedge brand – inspired confidence in terms of getting the ball to spin from a variety of lies and insisted the rounded C-grind sole was as versatile as they come.

A couple of gripes he had were the lack of bounce options with some lofts. He also noticed the clubface starting to wear on the copper finish after a few bunker shots. The head size is a little bigger than some but probably strikes the perfect balance between confidence and aesthetics for most golfers.

The sole is extremely versatile and the shape of the head is lovely – exactly what I would expect of Roger Cleveland. The sole is also wider than some but this will suit more golfers. The C-grind and the fact the bounce is located in the right place (not towards the heel) means it is versatile for better players as well. I’d have no problem putting these wedges straight into play.

A softer, more gradual ‘C’ shape provides versatility for shot-making by relieving the heel and reducing the width of the sole. This shape enables golfers to lay the face open while effectively reducing the bounce angle, allowing for proper contact and maximum spin and control.
