Today’s Golfer Hybrid Test 2011

Tested: July 2011
Testing panel:
Chris Ryan (Belfry Pro)
Leon Iacono (HCP 4)
David Connor (HCP 10)
Ben Miles (HCP 17)

This is aimed at the better player and as it sits slightly open is not one for the slicer but our three amateur testers loved the i15. Both Leon and Ben commented on the simple, clean looks while Dave said it was brilliant from all situations. Chris wasn’t as convinced saying that it was a little long heel-to-toe for his liking and the strong flight meant he wouldn’t feel as comfortable attacking greens. However, he praised the feel and said it was perfect off the tee.

Today’s Golfer Hybrid Test 2010

The i15 is designed for players who prefer a more penetrating tourinspired trajectory. Like the i15 driver and fairway wood, the face sits slightly open with a fade bias which can be intimidating but gives better players the confidence to whip the clubhead through and control shot shape easier. But despite these better-player features the i15 also comprises a high MOI, meaning it is still one forgiving beast and our test team heartily agreed with this. Chris said he couldn’t fault it but praised the flight and feel. Mark admitted the fade bias put him off because more of the face was showing at address and he felt he had to work hard. However, the effort paid off with top marks in distance and dispersion. Pro James’ stats were also impressive and although he admitted his left-to-right shot shape wasn’t ideally suited to the club he said the majority of better players would love it. David rated the i15 from all lies and admitted he much preferred the traditional shape. This may be aimed at better players but it performed brilliantly in all our testers’ hands and rightly grabs a gold award!

The Ping i15 Hybrid won a gold award in this years hybrids test in Today's Golfer (issue 271).

For golfers who prefer a traditional hybrid shape and size, the stainless steel i15 offers a high moment of inertia with a Tour-preferred trajectory. Internal weighting in the i15 positions the centre of gravity low and back to produce the penetrating ball flight that gives better players control to hit a variety of shots from almost any lie.

Stronger lofts contribute to lower spin rates for additional control.
