Today’s Golfer Hybrid Test 2011

Tested: July 2011
Testing panel:
Chris Ryan (Belfry Pro)
Leon Iacono (HCP 4)
David Connor (HCP 10)
Ben Miles (HCP 17)

Surprisingly for a Mizuno club our team said this felt harsh off the face but despite this it was a top performer for each of our testers and consistently one of the longest on test. Ben said it was more forgiving than he expected while both Leon and pro Chris said this would be a great option off the tee thanks to a powerful ball flight and slightly smaller head. Dave said he felt the CLK performed really well out of the rough thanks to the smaller head and rounded sole; only Ben agreed.

Distance: 4.6
Dispersion: 3.5
Looks: 3.1
Feel: 2.9
Forgiveness: 3.3
Fairway: 3.3
Tee: 3.9
Rough: 3.4

Today’s Golfer Hybrid Test 2010

A five-star performer across all categories for David other than dispersion saw him rate this among his own best on test. Strangely, pro James wasn’t as keen, marking it down for forgiveness even though it is aimed at the better player like him. It was one of his longest on test though. Mark, on the other hand, loved it saying he got great feedback and that it looked more like what he would expect of a hybrid.

Ratings (out of 5):

Looks: 4.1   Forgiveness: 3.8   Rough: 4   Distance: 4.6   Dispersion: 3.6

Mizuno MP-CLK Hybrid has a compact tour-ready profile for better players. Hot Metal steel face near USGA limit on COR for maximum distance. No hook bias with workable ball flight. Fubuki shaft as standard. Drop down crown for lie angle adjustment. Lofts: 17, 20, 23.

Mizuno have unleashed two hybrids for 2011, both of which are very different in order to cover a wide variety of handicaps. For the better players, the MP-CLK is a must. Featuring a small, compact head and Tour-ready square face, it offers sensational workability and even boasts an element of forgiveness. It makes the switch from long irons a no-brainer, even for the strong ball-strikers among you. It also features a drop-down crown and strategic weighting system which helps position the sweetspot lower on the face – this prevents a ballooning ball flight, giving good players the piercing trajectory they are searching for.

As some of the panel say, it is a little harsh off the face but out of the sweet spot i love the feel, weight and shaft.  It also looks like a great piece of Mizuno kit. It may take a short time but i will learn how to use this club.
