What we say...
Technology: Responding to consumer demand, MD Golf’s new hybrid or driving iron features a hollow structure to offer the playability of a hybrid but the launch conditions of an iron. Comes with a Precision Rifle or Mitsubishi Rayon shaft as standard.
Looks: The finish is an unusual shade of brown, not to my taste, and there’s a little too much offset for me even for a driving iron. The head shape and size is perfect, it frames the ball nicely without looking too chunky.
Feel/sound: Much like the driver in the range, it wasn’t as hot off the face as I was hoping. The hollow construction gave off a dull-ish sound, carrying the ball around the 220-yard mark with at least 20 more yards in roll.
Forgiveness: Pretty low, as you’d expect from such a low lofted iron. But the sole is very wide, which makes striking from the deck a much easier task. Poor strikes didn’t seem to affect the carry too much but the roll out was reduced.
Performance: You don’t have to hit down on this and compress it to send it out low – this characteristic is built in already. It’s got a really strong flight and you can hit it high if you want by sweeping it a little more. It works both off the tee and the fairway and while there are probably longer driving irons out there, this offers good value and a choice of three lofts. This is a genuine option for better players on a budget looking for a club off the tee or into par fives to hit low with plenty of run.
Price: £59.99 (Precision Rifle),£69.99 (Mitsubishi Rayon). Spec: 16°, 18°, 21°.
Verdict: Does a job from the tee and fairway. Keeps the ball out of the wind with ease, superb value too.
