What we say...
TaylorMade expands the high MOI Spider putters family with the all-new GT range using a new face for better roll and consistency.
Jump to: Spider GT | Spider GT Notchback | Spider GT Rollback | Spider GT Splitback
TaylorMade’s Spider has done more than any other flat stick to change putters over the last decade ranking in the best putters category for many years.
It played an instrumental role in convincing the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day – plus countless other pros – to switch to bigger, more forgiving, higher MOI putters, by teaming the similar feel and release of a toe hang putter with the forgiveness of a mallet.
Look back at previous Spider putters and you’ll see their bodies have had quite flowing, curved lines and edges. But some players like to see straighter, more defined lines and edges when putting – and that is where this four new GT putters comes in.
Previous Spider models have often had a wire frame body to remove mass from inefficient areas. The GT putters have much more of an open frame construction. The idea removes mass from the centre to create an extreme perimeter weighted design, so golfers get exceptional stability performance.
The Spider GTs are a mix of skim milled aluminium and cast 303 stainless steel, so golfers get sharp edges and zero painted finishes. TaylorMade say the material differences give a difference in sound and feel, too.

There’s also a new face insert and Fluted Feel Shaft. The Pure Roll 2 insert has aluminium bars running across the face (with 45° grooves) to improve topspin and get putts rolling faster. The urethane used is also slightly firmer to compensate for the feel of softer modern balls.
The same shaft is used in all four putters, with a softer section located five-inches from the tip to enhance feel, boost stability and improve dispersion.
TaylorMade have upgraded the headcovers, too. Gone is the velcro, replaced by a magnetic closure to provide a more premium and durable feel.
Let’s take a closer look at how the four models differ.

The headline act in the new Spider range, expect to see plenty of the GTs put in play on Tour in 2022. The head is slightly smaller than the previous Spider EX, but very similar to Rory McIlroy’s favourite Spider X.
The most striking feature of the Spider GT is the lightweight 145g top plate made from 6061 aluminium, which eliminates excess weight in the middle of the putter and carries a short sightline for alignment.
Combined with the ultralight top plate, the first of its kind open frame multi-material design features two 90g steel side weights that push 82 per cent of the putter’s total weight to the perimeter for extreme stability on off-centre strikes.
The Spider GT top plate is crafted from lightweight aluminium for both a premium look and increased durability compared to paint or PVD finishes, with four adonised finishes on offer.
There are three hosel options. The short slant design combines with Spider GT’s extreme perimeter weighting to generate 21° of toe hang for a more vertical angle, best for players with moderate face rotation in the putting stroke. The CG has been moved closer to face for an improved face rotation.
The single bend and centre shaft hosels create a face balanced putter that better fits players with a straight-back and straight-through putting motion.

Modern and Stable Shape
Spider GT sets a new standard in terms of performance and contemporary construction.
The modern wing design has sharp angular features and extreme perimeter weighting for optimal forgiveness.
Top Plate with Short Sightline
Made from lightweight 6061 Aluminum, the 145g top plate eliminates excess weight in the middle of the putter.
Steel Side Weight Construction
Steel side weights (80g per weight for a total of 160g) create a heavy frame for stability and distance control. Only 18% of the weight is centered in the middle to stabilize deflection on off-center strikes for maximum forgiveness.
PureRoll 2 Insert
The new firmer co-molded insert, manufactured of black TPU urethane with silver aluminum beams at a 45° angle designed to improve topspin across the face.
Fluted Feel shaft
A newly engineered stability putter shaft with a softer section located 5” from the tip, intently designed to enhance feel, increase stability and improve dispersion.

TaylorMade Spider GT Putter: Colours
The Spider GT is available in silver, black, red (men’s) and light blue (women’s). A putter is very much down to personal taste, but we’re huge fans of the red, which contrasts superbly against the greens and the white of the ball, making it feel very easy to align
Verdict: TaylorMade Spider GT putter
It’s really easy to write red headed putter’s off as gimmicks. Many sceptics did before Jason Day shot to World #1 with his red TaylorMade Spider Tour back in 2017 (which started a red putter revolution, and Xander Schauffele still uses a red coloured Odyssey putter today), but that’s exactly why TaylorMade have brought the new GT to market in four colour options, including a plain black set-up for complete traditionalists.
We love how over previous Spider’s the new lightweight aluminium top plate has really crisp angular sharp lines, which just hasn’t been possible with previous stainless steel cast and painted Spiders.
It’s a fresh new look and something CNC Milled putter fans will really enjoy.
We love how the model sets up at address, the stability of the fang shaped head (with its hefty two 90g side weights) and how the short single sightline and subtle golf ball width alignment aid makes a modern fanged putter look so unfussy and cluttered. Spider’s don’t come cheap, so make sure you love the model before making a purchase.
As far as compact stable putters go in 2022, the GT is right there amongst the very best.

TaylorMade Spider GT Notchback putter
RRP £279 | First available March 4, 2022
Hosels Single bend; short slant | Lengths 33″; 34″; 35″ | Women’s? No | Left-hand? Yes | Colours Silver only | Shaft TaylorMade Fluted Feel | Grip Super Stroke GT 1.0 Black/Red
The Notchback blends traditional design with contemporary construction to create the most classic Spider putter ever. CG is positioned the farthest forward to make face rotation easier.
Featuring a lightweight 6061 aluminium body combined with two 86g dual-tungsten weights on the outside (heel and toe), Notchback is designed for stability, forgiveness and distance control. TaylorMade say it produces the highest MOI ever created by a mid-size mallet Spider.
An extruded then machined aluminium head creates a stout section of material behind the face insert for a confidence-inspiring strike along with superb sound.
Both Spider GT Notchback and Rollback feature a tri-sole design that allows golfers to properly set the putter square on the ground without changing the face angle.
The short slant hosel combines with Notchback’s extreme perimeter weighting to generate 30° of toe hang for players with moderate face rotation in the putting stroke.
The single bend hosel creates a face-balanced putter that better fits a straight-back and straight-through putting motion.

Spider GT Rollback is a classic half-moon design enhanced by a heavy tungsten rollbar for added perimeter weighting and increased stability.
Rollback creates confidence at address with a raised, curved centre section that is the same width as a golf ball. This makes it easy to centre the ball in the address position and three contrasting black sightlines provide clear alignment with the hole.
The Rollback top design has a lighter anterior with a 232g cap crafted from anodised 6061 aluminium combined with TaylorMade’s first 80g tungsten stability bar that wraps around the back and side of the putter for added forgiveness and stability.
The short slant hosel combines with the Spider GT Rollback’s extreme perimeter weighting to generate 21° of toe hang for players with moderate face rotation in the putting stroke.
The single bend hosel creates a face-balanced putter that better fits a straight-back and straight-through putting motion.

Spider GT Splitback features a refined 304-stainless steel construction with geometric shaping and urethane foam strategically injected inside the putter head.
The split mass “winged” design allowed TaylorMade designers to redistribute mass around the perimeter of the putter in order to maximise MOI and stability. In this shape, a steel body naturally provides more perimeter weighting than an aluminium one.
Due to the high density of steel, the wing sections of the design needed to be partially pocketed out to remove excess weight. The chambers within the wings are filled with feel foam, similar to the SpeedFoam material used in P770 and P790 irons. Taylormade say this helps fill the voids and damp vibrations, resulting in better sound and feel.
Spider GT Splitback incorporates one of the standout features of Spider X with True Path, TaylorMade’s ball alignment and stroke visualisation aid. While standing over Spider GT Splitback, True Path is highly visible and seamlessly integrated into the head. The contrasting white section, black sightline and arrow-shaped rear edge help golfers visualise their putting stroke and ball path before ever executing the putt.
The 85° short slant hosel combines with Spider GT Splitback’s extreme perimeter weighting to generate 25° of toe hang for players with moderate face rotation in the putting stroke. The single bend hosel creates a face-balanced putter that better fits a straight-back and straight-through putting motion.
