What we say...

I review the Ping PLD Milled Ally Blue 4 Putter which is the most forgiving putter in Ping’s new range of PLD Milled putters

In 2023, Ping launched their first wave of PLD milled putters and they were an instant hit on Tour and in the amateur game. Ping have been the brains behind some of the best golf putters since they first created putters back in 1959.

Over the years Ping have manufactured some of the greatest blade putters and some of the finest mallet putters to grace the greens of our beloved game. Adding to the illustrious collection of the best Ping putters is the Ping PLD Milled Ally Blue 4 putter which has been released alongside four other models that have been added to the PLD range of Ping putters.

There is an impressive roster of golfers playing with PLD putters including Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Joaquin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen, Allisen Corpuz, Ally Ewing, Linn Grant, and Jennifer Kupcho to name a select few. All of those Tour pros listed above have taken the opportunity to develop a unique flatstick to suit their eye.

The Ally Blue 4 isn’t going to be for everyone, some golfers have taken to social media to voice their opinions about the putter – it’s safe to say that there is divided opinion over this model. Fans of the club have been much more succinct with their verdicts, saying they “love it” and that it looks “sick”. However, others haven’t held back in their comments with one person suggesting “it looks like a Wi-Fi router” and another saying “ouch that’s ugly”.

I’m firmly in the love-it camp as a massive fan of mallet putters with clear alignment aids. The black shaft, hosel, and head works extremely well – for me, Ping have nailed it with the Ally Blue 4.

While the appearance of a club is important, it’s not the be-all and end-all. Thankfully, the Ally Blue 4 is much more than just an aesthetically pleasing putter – in my opinion. Being an addition to the existing range of Ping PLD putters, the Ally Blue 4 features all of the technology found in the original PLD putters. However, this putter has been designed with increased MOI and while the shape of the head might not please everyone there is logic behind it – it’s been manufactured as an easy-to-align mallet.

What technology features in the Ping PLD Milled Ally Blue 4 Putter

Power of the machines

Unlike the other putters in the PLD range, the Ally Blue 4 is the only PLD putter that features a fully machined three-piece design. Both the body and hosel of the putter head are made from aluminum and the sole plate is made using 304-stainless steel.

Aggressive Milling Pattern

Each Ping PLD putter face endures more than four hours of milling time to create a precisely shaped surface and radius to achieve tour-preferred sound, feel, and speed – as well as the premium look and high-quality finish. The deep Aggressive Milling Pattern (AMP) face technology works extremely well with the high MOI of the Ally Blue 4 to deliver forgiveness and performance.

High MOI

MOI is a major talking point when it comes to drivers, with Ping and TaylorMade both seeking 10k MOI with their latest models – the Ping G430 Max 10k and TaylorMade Qi10 Max. However, it’s never massively discussed in putters but it’s always a factor. With the Ally Blue 4, it’s an even bigger factor than any other putter in the PLD range. By incorporating the chosen materials into the square footprint it has allowed Ping to manufacture a putter with incredibly high MOI for ultimate forgiveness on the greens.

Blackout

The original PLD putters that dropped in 2023 are available in either matte black or satin. However, the 2024 models, including the Ally Blue 4, are only available in one option. Every putter except for the Ally Blue 4 has a gunmetal finish, whereas this putter is completely blacked-out. Everything from the grip to the sole of the putter head is blacked out, apart from the contrasting white alignment aids. The Ally Blue 4 has one white alignment line that runs through the entirety of the center of the putter head.

This highly forgiving mallet putter is available in four different lengths from 33″ to 36″ which makes this mallet putter suitable for a wide range of golfers. The Ally Blue 4 is a toe-hang putter, hence why it’s best suited for golfers with a strong arc in their putting stroke – this isn’t common for mallet putters.

The Ally Blue 4 has been spotted on Tour in Freddy Schott’s bag, who plays on the DP World Tour. This putter is definitely an acquired taste but it’s hard to argue with the performance.
