Pros
The contrast between the white sight line and the black alignment bar on the crown of the product.
What we say...
The mallet-style wand has been precision milled from high-grade aluminium and features tungsten weighting in the sole which optimises the centre of gravity and increases forgiveness. It has also been designed with a black alignment bar which makes aiming easier for players of all abilities.
This putter shot to prominence with some standout performances from Ping staff player Hunter Mahan and we were desperate to see how it would fare in the hands of six normal golfers. The answer? Outstanding.
The Nome was designed to be simple to align, and every tester picked up on the contrast between the white sight line and the black alignment bar on the crown of the product. It was up there with the bigger models in the test in terms of size, but the fantastic balance meant that this wasn’t an issue.
Andrew gave it full marks in the looks department, as did Jon, with Richard picking up on the lovely roll offered off the face. Dave felt this was one of the most forgiving putters in the test due to the high MOI nature generated by the tungsten weights. That sensation was backed up by some impressive performance results.
It’s also worth noting the outstanding custom-fit option that Ping offer with the Nome – whether you have a straight path, slight arc or strong arc, different shaft bend options are available to suit your stroke, and it’s also available in a belly model.
Many club golfers miss putts through simple misalignment of the blade at address, but pro James, who dishes out lessons to hundreds of golfers every year, summed the putter up perfectly when he said that anyone who struggled with alignment should give the Nome a go.
So it’s another Ping win, and richly deserved for such a brilliant mallet putter that has been designed to take the pain out of the short game.
