Technology
Building on the success of the Scottsdale TR putters, the new Karsten TR model has multi-depth grooves milled directly into the face. Ping’s research revealed that deeper grooves slow down putts more than shallow ones. So the Karsten’s face has deeper grooves in the sweet spot and shallower ones towards the heel and toe, which are designed to provide a similar roll on putts hit from various points on the face. An elastomer back-cavity insert behind the face is designed to dampen vibration, enhance sound and improve feel. The quality bronze finish looks great, and reduces glare. There’s a model to suit all stroke types and you can choose from a fixed-length shaft (35in is standard) or an adjustable version.
Tested
As reviewed in our 2014 Putters Test: Winner of our Silver Award. The Zing is one of the classic Ping designs and combined with a grooved face makes for a formidable combination. Visually this putter tricks you into thinking you are aimed further right due to the angled trailing edge, helping right aimers bring their aim towards neutral. The short-necked hosel fitted well into the heel means a lot of toe hang to neutralise any pull tendency in your stroke. Very easy to aim well and start on line. Rolled well regardless of strike with decent feel.
Available in Zing, Anser 2, Anser 5, B60, and Pal models. Adjustable shaft £153, Non-adjustable £129
