What we say...
Odyssey White Hot OG putters bring back one of golf’s most popular face inserts in six different head shapes for 2021.
“Legendary then, iconic now,” is how Odyssey are promoting their new line of White Hot OG putters, two decades after the famous face and renowned 2-Ball putters first found fame.

There have been dozens of 2-Ball variations over the years, and it’s still hugely popular. But try as hard as they have to move consumers, pros and retailers into new face technology, golfers still yearned for a return to the soft but firm feel of the beloved White Hot insert. Odyssey even admit that more than half the putters they create for Tour players today still feature this insert.
Now, despite racking up the most worldwide wins and most putters in play at every Major in 2020, Odyssey have decided to turn back the clock in a bid to increase their dominance, bringing back the most popular putter face insert of all-time in six ultra-premium-looking White Hot OG putter heads.

The new range, with its rich silver PVD finish and finely milled surfaces, offers a putter to suit every golfer – 1 blade, 1WS wide-soled blade, smaller mallet 5, fanged 7, classic 2-Ball and wider mallet Rossie. Both the Rossie and 7 are available in either double bend face-balanced models or with slant necks and a degree of toe hang.

So what made the putter face so popular all those years ago?
The original White Hot was made from the same urethane as the cover on Callaway’s Rule 35 golf ball. Whereas soft inserts are usually slow, with a soft feel and dead sound, the two-part White Hot insert combined the feel of a softer model with the performance off a firmer face and returns in the new model.

Verdict: Odyssey White Hot OG 5 putter
Incredibly, 20 years after the original, more than half the putters Odyssey make for tour pros still feature an original White Hot face insert.
So it’s not that surprising Odyssey brought it back in 2021, and put it in six new models, together with a stiffer and more stable Stroke Lab shaft. The #5 has a lovely mallet shape and thanks to some surface milling (the whole head is not CNC milled), you get really clear and defined edges at address, which we love.
Team that with the firm-to-touch but soft-under-impact characteristics of the White Hot insert and a new candy apple-red Stroke Lab shaft (there is also a steel shaft option) and we reckon you’ve got your hands on a top performing putter for 2022.

Odyssey White Hot OG putter shaft and grip options
The White Hot OG range includes an updated version of Odyssey’s hugely popular and Major-winning Stroke Lab shaft in ‘Candy Apple’ red. It has a shorter stepless steel tip, weighs seven grams less than its predeccesor, is stiffer and more stable.
In testing Odyssey have seen decent consistency gains from the new shaft, with a 6% improvement in tempo, 9% gain in impact location and a 6% increase in arc.

There’s also a traditional steel shaft option for a slightly lower price.
All of the White Hot putters come with a grey Odyssey DFX grip as standard with an oversized option also available.
What Odyssey say about the White Hot OG putters
Luke Williams, Odyssey’s senior director of product and brand management, talks to TG about the new range.
Twenty years on from it’s original introduction, why did you decide to bring back the White Hot insert?
“One of the things we do with tour players, beside working with them to get them dialled in, is listen to them and get their feedback.
“We combine that with the feedback we get from club professionals, customers, golfers, our sales team, all different sources, and one of the things we’ve consistently heard throughout the years is that players have loved our White Hot insert and what a great product that was.
“Many of our tour players still use a White Hot insert, even on more modern designs we’ve retro-fit them with the insert. On tour now, half of the inserts are the original White Hot inserts, which made us think that if people really want that insert then we should really give it to them.
“We’re excited to bring back the original insert in White Hot OG. It’s better than ever in the way that we’ve packaged it. The attention to detail on these putters is top-notch, we’re really proud of them and we think they do service to this legendary insert.
“We’ve just started to get it out on tour and it’s been really popular so far.”

Have you changed the insert in any way for the 2021 models?
“We make this insert in exactly the same way we made the original White Hot. Through the years we’ve had different versions of White Hot with different urethanes and different manufacturing processes, but this goes back to the original material, original construction.
“It’s a two-part urethane that gets cast in sheets and then we laser cut those sheets into the individual insert shapes. It’s a unique process and produces an insert that is unlike anything else.
“The material is unique in that it is firm to the touch but under impact loads it performs and feels like a soft material. It also has great rebound for a soft material.
“It’s relatively easy to find soft materials you can make an insert out of, the challenge is that they tend to be slow so at impact you get a quiet sound and soft feel and the ball comes off dead or without the same speed you’d get from a different insert or metal-faced putter, so the speed of White Hot is a critical component.
“We’ve been trying to replicate White Hot and its properties for years but there’s nothing that’s quite like White Hot, so we’ve come back to it.”
Did you attempt to create a new face before deciding to bring back White Hot?
“Originally we were focused on matching the hardness (Shore D) or White Hot, but we could never quite match the sound, feel and speed.
“As we looked deeper at the material properties with our golf ball team, we noticed a difference in flex modulus, so even in a given hardness the flex could vary from one material to the next and that’s where White Hot was unique. The flex modulus along with the hardness creates this almost magic formula.” See the graphic below for a direct comparison with Odyssey’s other putter faces.
What can you tell us about the new Stroke Lab shaft?
“The Stroke Lab has a shorter steel section than its predecessor and we’ve removed the steps from the steel section. We’ve saved seven grams of weight and made the shaft a little stiffer which makes it more stable and provides even more consistency.
“What stood out with the original Stroke Lab was how much more consistent players’ hit locations were and we’ve seen that get even better with this newer version.”
