What we say...
Tech:
Odyssey’s engineers reckon the new “microhinge” face insert in the Works will redefine what golfers consider to be good roll. New finger shaped grips on the stainless steel face plate are combined with a thermoplastic elastomer feel layer to grab and interact with the cover at impact, lifting the ball into a better roll.
Our verdict:
On the surface the R-Line looks like just another mallet putter from Odyssey but we reckon its attention to detail and overall tech package warrants more than just a second look. Yes Odyssey have made the R Line’s shape before, but the O-Works has so much more to bring to the party than just a new insert. The updated Versa (black, white, black) cosmetics are perfectly enhanced with a single red alignment stripe, which some might think wouldn’t work but it really does. There’s toe and heel sole weights to improve stability, the choice of Superstroke grips with the capacity to counter weight the putter and that’s before we even mention how the insert feels fantastic and rolls putts better than any Odyssey putter from yesteryear.
Bottom line:
The R-Line is a simple face balanced mid – large headed mallet which is well suited to straight back and through strokes. Feel from the O-Works face wasn’t the softest or firmest we tested, but feedback is muted which we reckon like the roll was spot on and well suited to mid – quick green speeds.
