Ben Hogan Bettinardi Big Ben Mallet Putter Review

Humungous Ben, more like. This is a real brute of a putter, milled from a solid block of aluminium. Jim Furyk used a scaled down version when claiming the US Open last year and it has been much sought after ever since.

Perhaps more than any other putter in this test, the Big Ben is a genuine work of art. The Beehive centre cavity is drilled through with 17 holes, which not only looks amazing but ensures more weight is positioned behind the ball, while the Honeycomb finish has been touched off with a jewellers precision.

As with the MacGregor, the Big Ben’s size creates as many problems as it solves. While the TG testers liked the T-shaped alignment aid and found the putter easy to use on shorter  putts, over longer distances the heavier head was a little unwieldy and hard to get used to. Yes, it is possible to stick with it – and the head shape certainly promotes an even, prendulum-like swing – but compared to some of its rivals we felt less immediately comfortable with the Big Ben.

Verdict: A beautifully crafted larger headed putter that will take a bit more getting used to but might just be worth the effort.
