Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons Review

Wilson Staff’s FG Tour V4 irons combine a traditional forged feel and look with some modern technology and design tweaks by its PGA Tour players.

They are designed to offer a consistent trajectory through the set via the use of an 18-gram tungsten weight in the sole of the 3-7 irons. Wilson says this lowers the centre of gravity and increases the launch without adding spin. In addition, the upper portion

of the face – where no impact occurs (or shouldn’t!) – has been thinned by 11 per cent in order to reposition the mass to the perimeter for a higher MOI and added forgiveness.

The bulk of the mass, however, remains concentrated in the impact area to maintain a solid, blade-like feel and provide workability on centre or close-to-centre impacts.

“It’s important that the V4 irons maintain the visual characteristics our Tour staff expect to see and their feedback has been very positive,” said Michael Vrska, Wilson Golf’s Global Director of Innovation.

“Now more golfers outside the Tours can benefit from the innovations we’ve made to improve playability and performance for the better, feel player.”

Other features include precision-milled grooves, forged carbon steel construction, nickel-chrome finish and True Temper Dynamic Gold DG Pro shafts.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Kevin Streelman (left) has been involved in the design, and told us: “The first prototype V4 iron I put in my hand confirmed we’re making adjustments to the right things. These irons have improved my trajectory and helped me be more accurate. I’m a numbers guy and the new V4s deliver.”

Technology
Forged irons that use a tungsten weight in the 3-7 irons to lower the CG and increase launch without adding unwanted spin. A thinner upper portion of the face saves weight that is redistributed to the perimeter to increase MOI.

Looks 
Very traditional in shape and finish with shiny mirrored areas surrounding a matte area on the face. Not too much offset and compact enough to appeal to both better players and some game improvers.

Feel/Sound
A pleasingly soft feel from the face, lots of feedback on the strike. Superb sensation from the sweetspot that oozes quality. Not too clicky either, enjoyable through impact.

Forgiveness
You might lose out on distance and accuracy on really poor strikes compared to other larger models but those that hit their irons competently will find the perimeter-weighted design of these irons offers ample help on bad swings.

Performance
Two things stood out here. Firstly, the consistent trajectories on the mid and long irons and the tightness of the dispersion front-to-back. While the short irons tended to balloon slightly, the rest of the set offered a consistent mid trajectory and as a result, the distances were very similar. In fact, the three 6-iron test shots I hit had one yard between them. This is a testament to the quality of the forged construction but also the forgiveness on offer in a compact head.
