What we say...

Ever since the invention of their Fat Shaft, Wilson clubs, have had a very distinctive look – and one that it’s not uncommon for golfers to dislike the moment they see it.

If you can bear with it, however, you’ll open up a whole new world of very playable clubs that might just help improve your game.

The reason Wilson have stuck by the Fat Shaft is that it really does work, in both irons and woods. Most golfers agree that it’s a lot more stable in the tip than conventional shafts, which helps prevent excessive ball movement in the air.

Add this to the Deep Red II Distance’s oversized face (a little reminiscent of a Ping iron) and a urethane insert in the cavity that dampens vibrations and you’ve got a powerful-feeling modern golf club. One of our testers also particularly liked the unusual (these days, at least) wrap-style grip.

It’s possibly true to say that most novices won’t get quite as much help to get the ball airborne as they would from a more obvious cavity back, but if your problems are more to do with accuracy, then give these Wilson Deep Red II Distance irons a test spin. They might just make a difference.

Verdict: Nicely oversized irons that are easy to use and could help you hit more greens in regulation. Not to be underestimated.
