Wilson Staff D-100 Game Improver Irons Review

  • At a glance

  • TG Rating 3.8 out of 5
  • Owner Rating 4.5 out of 5
  • Pros

Traditional shape, light feel, forgiving in the mid to short irons and offers good value.

  • Cons

Long irons lacked feel or forgiveness. Not as hot off the face as others in the category.

What we say...

2013 Irons Test

James felt even in his spec it looked very upright and toed-in, but praised the traditional look. Kit felt the head was a little bit chunky and square with a thick top line. Chris noted how large the sweetspot felt and the soft, forged-like feel, but that the appearance let it down. This was a middle-of-the-road performer for all three testers, the best coming from Kit, whose dispersion was just six yards.

Do you want an additional 15-yards off the tee, and up to 10 yards on your iron shots? Then you’re going to want to read this, because Wilson Staff have launched their new D-100 range of woods and irons which are said to do exactly that. With more and more of the world’s top players moving to lighter clubs, Wilson decided to design a range which balances the correct weight distribution across the clubhead, shaft and grip for greater distance.

“You can make clubs that are too lightweight,” said Michael Vrska, Wilson Golf’s Global Director of R&D. “But extensive research has shown that light technology can help the game-improvement player expend the same amount of effort and get faster clubhead speeds for serious distance.”

The one-piece, cast, stainless steel heads feature Wilson’s thinnest-face irons (up to 7 per cent thinner than Di11). They have a larger unsupported face area, which creates more of a “trampoline” effect. Making the face thinner and lighter also leads to increased MOI, higher launch and better spin properties. A 50-gram ring, or “exoskeleton,” positioned lower and towards the heel and toe to boost forgiveness (12 per cent higher MOI than the Di11).

Added 15-20 yards average to my shots and no adverse impact on consistency of strike and accuracy. Have improved my enjoyment scoring considerably. Love these irons! 22 handicapper.

Started playing with these middle of the summer 2013 and my rounds have dropped from 115-120 down to 95-105. It's been a tough winter but with the irons as long as you hit the club sweet spot which seems bigger then 9 times out of 10 it will fly. Very happy and Wilson as a brand is so underated.
