What we say...
We always keep a close eye on equipment developments in the US… because if something is a success over there, it usually finds its way to the UK. This is beginning to happen with Tour Edge, which enjoys good market share across the pond and a fair bit of Tour validation as well.
It is true they are better known for their Exotics line of woods but there are two new irons in that line
up for 2012 as well – the CU and the CB.
The CU is the larger of the two irons and aimed more at the mass market. It features an undercut cavity in the rear of the head to help position more weight away from the face and around the perimeter. But where this impressed for me is how much it looks like a proper golf club.
There are some hugely-forgiving irons on the market these days but some of them are very large and about as appealing as a 200-yard carry over water into a strong headwind. The CU is different because it looks like a traditional club with a blade length, topline and sole that doesn’t scream ‘game improver’.
In truth, there are more forgiving irons out there but for a traditional player looking to progress then these are without
doubt worth a look.
Pros: They look very much like ‘proper’ golf clubs despite being forgiving.
Cons: The CUs aren’t as forgiving as some competitors.
The new Exotics CU Iron is a perfect blend of classic feel and enhanced forgiveness. The CU’s thin topline, medium-sized blade width, reduced progressive offset and tour-beveled sole inspire confidence to work the ball in any direction and land it close to the pin.
At the core of the CU iron’s technology is its deep undercut cavity. The undercut moves weight away from the face and into the sole for a higher moment of inertia, a higher launch angle, and enhanced forgiveness. For better playability, the CU’s cavity features extreme heel and toe weighting. The weighted areas in the heel and toe represent a significant portion of the sole’s total weight. This added weight in the perimeter of the club improves accuracy on heel-toe hits while still allowing the player to feel and work each shot.
For the ideal level of workability and feel, the CU has reduced offset and a tour-beveled sole. The bevel reduces the sole’s contact with the ground, increasing its playability and allowing it to feel more like a forged blade.
