What we say...
Last time TG took an in-depth look at game improvement irons, we raved about TaylorMade’s rac OS (for ‘OverSize’) clubs, hailing them as “the best TaylorMade irons ever”. Since then, the company have added what they claim are the even easier-to-use HTs (‘High trajectory’) to the rac range. At this rate, the next set will just about hit themselves.
For the time being, though, the HTs will do just nicely. We found them to be right up with the very best in terms of playability. The ultra-deep cavity back helps position the centre of gravity good and low for the promised high trajectory (even at slower swing speeds), while the wide sole glides smoothly across the fairway rather than digging in. They’re just very easy to use.
One thing we particularly liked about these TaylorMade irons was the ‘Tuned Performance Cartridge’ positioned deep within the cavity of each iron. Not only does this act as a shock absorber, giving a softer feel than many rival irons, but it also reduces weight in the head, making the rac HT feel noticeably lighter than, say, Big Bertha.
Genuine novices might prefer the larger face area of a MacGregor or Ping, but this more compact headshape will continue to appeal even as your game improves.
Verdict: TaylorMade market these irons for golfers with slower swing speeds, but you don’t need to be 85-plus to enjoy the playability benefits of one of the most carefully designed sets on the market.
