What we say...

TaylorMade have revealed their new super-forgiving and ultra-playable M CGB irons – and say they are so easy to hit it’s like having a bag full of drivers

Imagine the fun you’d have if every club in your bag was as easy to hit as a driver. Sound like a good idea? Well it’s the inspiration engineers have used to create the new super-forgiving and ultra-playable TaylorMade M CGB irons.

“Honestly it’s like playing the game with a bagful of drivers TaylorMade’s Director of Irons Tomo Bystedt told TG.

“Our engineers have designed every iron face to deliver the same amount of flexibility and bounce back as a driver, and we’re the only brand to have a full set of maximum COR irons on the market.”

Everything you need to know about iron shaft weight. And why it’s now more important than flex.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons Review: You Should Know

With the same amount of face flex in every iron as a driver the M CGBs are fast, fun and forgiving. An ultra-low CG placement flights shots higher with optimized spin rates to maximise carry distance. Speed pocket and face slot tech is combined with tungsten weighting to create a super forgiving high MOI design, which boasts of extra ball speed and accuracy consistency across the whole club face.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: We Say

By posting ball speeds and carry distances within the top three fastest and longest super game improvement irons for each tester it’s got to be said the CGBs have the ability to perform. The heads have plenty of offset, a wide sole and chunky top edge but thanks to a lightweight shaft overall feel is surprisingly lively and friendly, even if two testers didn’t think the face felt quite as flexible or explosive as the Cobra King OS.

Thanks to the nicely shaped heads Simon reckoned even though he’s a 10 handicapper he could easily slip a set in the bag. It’s worth remembering the CGB’s have the same amount of face flex as a driver throughout the whole set, which means you’re highly likely to gain a bit of distance with the 8, 9 and PW as these are the clubs usually left without fast face tech.

The truth about strong lofted irons

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Verdict

A decent looking super game improvement iron which can do a job for a wide audience of golfers. Ideally suited to golfers who really want as much distance as they can get their hands on, but don’t quite have the club speed to launch the long and mid irons of a strong lofted set (like the Callaway Rogue X and TaylorMade M4) from the turf.

Even though the M CGB offers more forgiveness than any other iron in TaylorMade’s line- up, they don’t have the strongest loft. And that tells a story. The extra loft and lighter weights are tailored to help average swing speed players optimise launch, spin and height to improve carry.

Every iron in the set gives as much face flex as a modern driver, which you won’t get in most fast-faced models. And for a super game improver iron, the M CGB has a really nicely shaped head. They have been in TaylorMade’s iron line for two years come August, which means they’re likely to be updated at some point soon. But in the meantime, if you want extra speed and distance from your irons, but struggle to launch the M6 or Callaway’s Rogue X from the turf, these are a brilliant option.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Key Features

For golfers, and especially those with lower than average swing speeds, the introduction of the TaylorMade M CGB irons means more launch, ball speed and carry distance.

And because the TaylorMade M CGB iron heads are big, have a huge cavity back and tungsten toe and heel weighting, they also deliver maximum off-centre forgiveness and playability too. It all sounds like a good idea to us, this is how they’ve done it.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Pushing the limit for maximum distance in every iron

TaylorMade claim that having the M CGB irons in your bag is like having a full set of drivers – easy to hit with big distance attached. To do that, TaylorMade have put in the following three facets;

A Sub-2mm face thickness in every iron pushes the limit on ball speed and distance

Ultra-low CG placement for high-trajectory and optimized spin rates

Consistently high COR through the set, making it our fastest set from 4-PW ever

TaylorMade M CGB Iron: Tungsten weights

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Oversized profile

A bigger head (toe to heel and face height) makes the club face of the TaylorMade M CGB irons larger, and therefore it becomes much easier to get a greater sized area to flex more.

TaylorMade recognise the CGB’s shape and size isn’t for everyone but if your game could benefit from the highest levels of forgiveness and extra ball speed then the CGB has all the credentials to deliver the best for your game.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Fluted hosel

Ultimate forgiveness can only be achieved by removing mass from inefficient areas and repositioning it to improve playability. Weight is scooped out of the CGBs fluted hosel and positioned lower to have a better impact on forgiveness.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: 4 x Tungsten weights

Higher and straighter shots are the bench mark for irons positioned at this end of the market, which is why TaylorMade’s M CGB irons have a multi-material head construction.

Cast 450SS with four milled Tungsten micro-weights placed in the toe and the heel of the irons improve resistance to twisting on off centre hits, increasing accuracy and keeping ball speeds higher. They also mean the M CGB irons will have higher peak shots than TaylorMade’s equivalent M2 irons, and create a higher MOI in every iron in the set.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: 360deg Undercut

Anyone who’s been on a strict diet in search of improved fitness will know how difficult it is to shed pounds from their chassis. Golf club designers face a similar challenge shedding every last gram from their latest iron models in a bid for optimisation.

To combat this, there is a clever 360deg undercut inside the TaylorMade M CGB iron’s top edge. This removes weight from high in the blade, yet thanks to some very clever geocoustic engineering, TaylorMade reckon the M CGB iron still both sounds and feels great

360 undercut.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Dual accordion sole slot

TaylorMade have consistently spouted about the performance benefits of fast face iron tech over the years. Previous models of their irons have shown that the roll sole and face slots play a big part in improving and maintaining ball speeds – so it’s no surprise both feature in the TaylorMade M CBG irons.

The M CGB irons ultra-thin leading edge and accordion style sole with Speed Pocket are aimed at producing greater forgiveness. This lets the face and particularly the lower section of the face (which research shows is where lots of club golfers actually impact shots) flex to the limits of the rules.

In addition, Face Slots on the M CGB irons provide increased ball speed on heel and toe mis-hits for amazing consistency.

TaylorMade M CGB Irons: Geocoutic Technology for Fine-Tuned Sound and Feel

With the TaylorMade M CGB irons there was a big focus on making them easier to hit, as well as giving them a fine-tuned sound.

This has been achieved by a precision-shaped head geometry for optimal acoustics at impact as well as an advanced Hybrar damper and stiff 3D sound-managing badge dampen vibrations and soften feel
