2013 Golf Irons Test

James and Kit felt this was about the right-size clubhead for a Super Game Improver. It looks lofted and there’s plenty of offset, but the contrast of the white grooves and dark finish makes lining the face up easy. Chris noted how similar the OS model looked to previous Burner models, the thick topline and wide sole boosting his confidence at address. He was also impressed with how he was able to get the ball in the air even with the long irons and with decent distance, too.

As a better player looking to shape the ball, James found it more difficult to work it from right-to-left, but said that’s a plus for high handicappers whose shots tend to curve away from the target. Kit loved the sound the ball made off the face – a powerful fizz on well-struck shots really made you want to pull another ball and have another go. Performance-wise, all three testers achieved commendable distance control and dispersion. James’ dispersion was just three yards, while the distance between Chris’ longest and shortest shots was just eight yards.

TaylorMade’s previous Burner irons were absolutely magnificent, and all game-improvers would have benefited from using a set. So the return of the franchise that disappeared from the TaylorMade arsenal at the start of the year looks set to be just as successful.

In terms of target golfer, the irons are probably aimed at players with higher handicaps, but we all want to hit the ball high, long and straight, so I had absolutely no problem putting these into play during a recent round at Greetham Valley Golf Club, just off the A1.

I don’t struggle to get the ball airborne with irons, but the Burner OS clubs really did send the ball into orbit from every conceivable lie and with good distance too.

The look of the club at address is very similar to previous Burner models, and that muscular topline gives a huge boost to the confidence levels, especially when the little white thing is buried in the rough – something which higher handicappers and I have in common far too regularly these days!

The other thing to note about the irons is the sound they produce – the ball fizzes off the face and the acoustic produced, especially when you catch one flush from the centre of the club, is absolutely terrific.

It’s hard to imagine there is a more forgiving iron on the market than this, but if you’re improving quickly the chunky appearance may only appeal for a short period of time before you seek something more compact.

Pros: Brilliantly forgiving, confidence inspiring and impressively long.
Cons: The irons are large, which may only appeal to golfers with high handicaps.

When TaylorMade launched the RocketBallz franchise earlier this year, TG thought that might mean the end for the Burner name. But 10 months down the line we’ve just got our hands on the new Burner OS irons.

The irons have been engineered with Inverted Cone Technology for faster ball speeds across the face to improve distances even on mis-hits, while an ultra-low centre of gravity makes getting the ball airborne easy even if you are an inconsistent ball striker.

We also like the lightweight shafts which allow even those with slower swing speeds to achieve impressive distance enhancements.

Aesthetically, they aren’t going to appeal to many golfers playing off more than a 12 handicap, but the high-flying trajectory will help those who struggle with their irons
