What we say...
To anyone who has used Callaway X-16s, these irons may look familiar. Even the idea of numbering the face as well of the sole is replicated. But fair play to Sky Golf; these are less than half the price of a set of X-16s – or any other premium set of game-improvement irons – and offer remarkably high performance.
Unlike most of the other irons in this test, the Ice Plus offers a proper, heavy-duty cavity that shifts the weight in the club head down beneath the ball. This makes getting your Pro V1 airborne a doddle and easily produces a towering ball flight, even in the longer irons.
The clubhead and shaft seem to be working together to help you play your best golf. Add this to the solid feel and impeccable balance through the set and what you have is nine clubs that are simply very enjoyable to hit. As a rule of thumb, and test of a good iron is whether they make you want to stay out there hitting them; these clubs passed that exam with flying colours. Even the 3-iron was a treat to use, and it’s not often you can say that of a £200 set of clubs.
One word of warning: as is the case with the Hippos, these irons feature a more compact head shape than many high handicappers might prefer. But if you can cope with that, you’re unlikely to be disappointed with the way these clubs work.
Verdict: Not the most original-looking irons, but solid performance all the way. Fun to use.
