Ping says that distance, forgiveness and a high trajectory distinguish the G30 irons from its competition. Progressive lengths and stronger lofts, plus a lower centre of gravity and more perimeter weighting, are said to combine for a three-to-seven-yard increase over the G25s. The key improvements are:

• Better distance control: Comes from a new Custom Tuning port that sits very low and supports a thin face to generate faster ball speeds. The CTP and an undercut cavity help position the centre of gravity lower to optimise launch and forgiveness, while ensuring a solid feel.

• Higher flight: A longer blade length expands the perimeter weighting and increases MOI to aid a higher flight. A soft elastomer cavity badge further contributes to the solid feel and sound.

• New sole design: A more rounded sole design improves turf interaction, helping achieve more consistent trajectories.

• Different lofts: Lofts in the longer irons have been strengthened to cater for the slightly longer shaft lengths and improved launch – from the 8-iron down, the lofts are up to two degrees stronger than the G25.

The new model features a longer blade length from heel to toe as well as a more rounded sole to improve turf interaction. Progressive offset, lengths and lofts along with a thinner face maximise ball speed while a lower CTP structure ensures a higher launch.

Looks
Not too dissimilar to G25, has the same darker finish and chunky appearance. Bundles of offset and the white scoreline combined with longer length from heel to toe makes aligning the face easier.

Feel/sound
It was difficult to know when you didn’t find the sweetspot as mis-strikes felt similar and carry distance likewise. Balls didn’t seem to stay on the face for long, coming off hot but still with a soft-ish feel.

Forgiveness
The thinner face means more weight is placed at the edges. Combine that with a longer blade length and you’ve got an iron that offers loads of stability through the hit. These are all about accuracy and distance.

Performance
Extremely easy to hit. With the added blade length you really feel like you can’t miss. They’re long too – very long – but you can’t help but wonder how much of that is down to the stronger lofts and longer shafts. For those players looking for help in getting the ball airborne and keeping it there, the G30 fits the bill. Fast swingers will get something out of them, too, but there’s more on offer for your mid-to-slow swingers who struggle with inconsistency.
