2013 Irons Test

James got some inconsistent distances with some balls coming off like a rocket. He and Joel enjoyed the classic shape, perhaps a little chunky but the sunken cavity was well disguised. Kit and Chris enjoyed the forgiveness on offer and the strong flight it gave. James and Joel got above average distance at 181 and 175 yards respectively. Dispersion was tight across the board (single figures for all) but distance control let it down in performance.

First Hits Test – January 2013

Nike’s game-improver irons have been impressive in recent years – the VR_S irons were magnificent, and the new Covert irons have taken on the baton. Towering ball flight came as standard with these and the design makes them very stable.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about them though is how Nike engineers have managed to pack so much forgiveness into what is actually a very good-looking clubhead. At that price they’re also incredibly competitive.

Pros: Fantastic looks and top-quality performance.
Cons: Maybe not quite as easy on the feet as the Biom Hybrids, but this is a split hair. Pricey, though.

Game-improver irons have, historically, been sizeable units - but now Nike might have just helped to change things with the launch of their new VR_S Covert irons.

The cavity back design remains, but it's the look at address that is the most impressive thing in terms of aesthetics about the new irons. The topline isn't overly thick, and even the longer irons look sleek.

The clubs incorporate the NexCOR face technology that was the driving force behind last year's impressive VR_S range, which gives golfers impressive distances from a greater area of the face.

"Distance, control, and consistency are the keys to successful golf shots," said Nike Golf Director of Club Creation, Tom Stites. "We combined a High Speed Cavity Back, NexCOR technology, and a dual bevel sole to maximise distance for every club in the bag. Golfers will notice positive improvements not only on crisp shots, but on off-centre shots as well," he added.
