What we say...
Nike CPR Concept
Nike’s CPR concept (which stands for ‘clubs for prevention and recovery’) was launched last year with a series of easy-to-use wedges and hybrid clubs. This summer they’ve filled in the gap with matching cavity-back mid and short irons to form a whole CPR set. If you’re a Nike-minded high handicapper you’ll have to choose these clubs and the slingshots we looked at last month.
The CPR Wood is certainly one of the most distinctive clubs you’ll come across. More ‘wood’-shaped that most hybrids, it features a dazzling crimson colour that won’t appeal to everyone. Interestingly, the lofts on the two CPR Woods are higher than most of the other hybrids, it features a dazzling crimson colour that won’t appeal to everyone. Interestingly, the lofts on the two CPR Woods are higher than most of the other hybrids in these sets, so once you’ve got used to the feeling of such a big head on such a short shaft, get ready to see a towering ball flight. The CPR Woods might therefore be a little shorter than some rivals, but the soft landing they produce makes them ideal for approach shots. They also work brilliantly from poor lies.
The mid and short irons are neat little things that feel well-balanced and solid at impact and hit the ball as consistently as any of the irons here. If anything, we preferred them slightly to the funkier Slingshots.
Unfortunately, if you’re a left-handed British golfer, a CPR set won’t be heading for your bag as they’re not available for lefties here. For a mass-market set from a major company like Nike, that’s a big disappointment.
Verdict: Like many Nike products, the CPRs feature love-‘em-or-hate-‘em looks alongside very sound performance. Game improvement almost guaranteed.
