What we say...

Unlike some of MD Golf’s clubs, these are not the most attractive irons in the world of golf. The graphite shafts on the set we were sent are an alarming combination of black, grey and silver. And the heads are cheap-looking, with their grooves painted black. But they work just fine.

The irons have progressive undercut cavities – in other words, you get plenty of cavity in the long irons and hardly any in the short irons, where nearly everyone prefers a more compact look. In theory  this makes them ideal for high to mid- handicappers, but even our low handicap tester was impressed. Some lesser irons produce a slightly ‘wobbly’ ball flight, but the tour Steels hit consistent, stable shots time after time. Distances were also more consistent than is often the case with similarly-priced sets.

A further bonus to the Tour Steel irons is MD Golf’s custom-fitting programme. At 100 centres across the UK, you can try out the four most common custom-fit options and have them delivered immediately. Anything more unusually will take a couple of weeks.

Verdict: Very solid irons that perform better than they look. Many more custom-fit options than most irons at this price.
