What we say...
A few hits into the test, one of our testers expressed surprise. “It’s amazing,” he said. “These feel like forged irons.” Only then did he look more closely and see the word ‘forged’ stamped on the hosel. A-ha.
The point is that these are no orginary game-improvement clubs. While most irons of this type sacrifice something in feel for the guarantee of consistent hitting, the M455s seem to offer the best of both worlds: plenty of help for less-that-proficient golfers alongside the soft, responsive feel at impact that only better-play clubs are supposed to produce. It’s a remarkable achievement.
All this performance comes wrapped up in elegant, vaguely art deco looks that make the the m455 of the most distinctive irons on the market. Okay, purists might object to the sheer bulk on view, but the average amateur will surely love the oversized face and thick topline. Besides, that bulge behind the face is working hard to increase playability – and although it looks big, the clubhead never feels heavy.
And another thing: we loved the straight leading edge of the M455 wedges. Just one more reason to part with four hundred quid.
Verdict: The playability of cavity-backs with the feel of forging? Impossible say the traditionalists. Perfectly possible, says anyone who’s tried MacGregor’s marvellous M455s.

Oh my god, just finished a round with my new irons and i have taken 4 shots off straight away. i normally play off 18 so to hit an 85 on my first out suggests something. they feel so good on connection and having had them custom fit i totally recommend them to anyone who is looking to take a step up the handicap ladder!
