What we say...
Tech:
Cobra’s first ever adjustable hosel iron, which gives you the option of playing it as either a 2 or 3 iron. A hollow body construction saves weight and allows 67g of tungsten weighting to be positioned low and deep in the head to maximise forgiveness. A forged L-Cup face maximises COR to deliver faster ball speeds for improved launch and maximum distance.
Our verdict:
Utility long irons are making a bit of a comeback on tour as a decent number of the world’s best players either prefer them over hybrids or combine them into a set including a hybrid. Don’t get us wrong these are never going to be mass market, long irons of any kind are always going to be a niche market, as their longer length and less loft make them less forgiving and more difficult to flight at mid – slower swing speeds. But we reckon if you’re looking for a utility long iron the Kings are well worth your consideration. The ability to change loft and shot bias is really appealing, in our book it makes it possible to work the club into any set. Our test pro Chris really liked the penetrating flight, thinking he could launch shots just as easily from the fairway as he could from a tee. For us to see success with the King you do need a reasonably high swing speed to be able to launch shots off the deck, but that’s similar to every other utility iron on the market…hence why hybrids are so popular with club golfers.
Bottom line:
The King’s a decent combo of a reasonably large head with thicker top edge to inspire confidence but without being stupidly oversize which is likely to put off the very golfers it’s supposed to attract. There’s a lot of low and deep tungsten weighting and thanks to its positioning we reckon its really stable and good for preserving ball speed when you don’t hit the centre of the face, which for a club of this length and loft trust us you’re going to need.
