The top line is thick and has an angled edge to it, which some testers weren’t a fan of, but besides that the headshape is very classic, simple and nondescript, which all the testers enjoyed. The white bottom groove made alignment easy. James and Joel praised the feel off the face, being soft, almost forged-like, but stable and powerful. Just like with the Amp Cell driver, Kit got a higher flight than he was used to but mis-hits held their line impressively. Chris felt like the sweetspot was bigger than others in the category, which boosted his confidence. Three of four testers felt the weight was just right.

Technology has allowed innovations we might define as game-improver to be built into more clubs, and two new examples of this have been unveiled by TaylorMade and Cobra.

Cobra’s colourful AMP Cell irons have been designed using a metalwood face-weld construction in the 4-7 irons for faster ball speeds, while the tried and trusted E9 Face Technology gives them a progressive face and cavity design to improve distance, feel and forgiveness based on a golfer’s most common impact patterns. Internal cell weighting enables more precise centre of gravity placement.

While the face-welded construction targets distance, The Amp is also designed to be kind on mis-cues. Internal cell weighting in the irons has allowed engineers to move weight to the perimeter of the club to create more forgiveness.

The “standard” version of the AMP Cell irons will feature a cavity back design (pictured), but we understand the Tour model will be more like a traditional blade.

In addition to the technology in the new AMP Cell irons, golfers will be able to choose what colour accent they want; red, silver, orange and blue are all on offer, following the story Cobra have pushed with their new AMP Cell woods.

Pros: The lines of the iron inspire confidence, and solid strikes easily create a strong and soaring flight.

Cons: The technology in the irons is proven and strikes from the middle are superb, but I’ve hit more forgiving irons.

COBRA has launched the AMP CELL irons that will complement the drivers, woods and hybrids in their 2013 range.

With a metalwood face-weld construction, E9 Face Technology, AMP CELL technology, a V-Skid sole design, vibration management system and speed channel, these irons are positioned to deliver explosive distance, maximum forgiveness and pinpoint accuracy.

The AMP CELL 4-7 irons feature a metalwood construction with a thin, high strength steel face that is welded to a softer 431 stainless steel body. This optimises the irons to create a COR zone, controlled weighting and provides a lighter face; all working together to generate faster ball speeds for improved distance and forgiveness.

The AMP CELL irons have a progressive face and cavity design that makes the longer irons easier to hit and the shorter irons easier to control. The internal cell weighting also enables precise CG placement, moving weight from the face and body to create perimeter weighting which positions the CG behind the Sweet Zone to provide a higher MOI for greater forgiveness.

The V-Skid sole combines a higher bounce leading edge with heel toe relief, resulting in a sole that is versatile for better players, yet forgiving for mid and higher handicappers. This works with the vibration management system to reduce unwanted vibration and sound for exceptional feel.

The COBRA AMP CELL Irons are available in right and left handed models in both steel and graphite (either 4-PW or 5-SW stock sets). The steel irons feature a True Temper Dynalite 90 shaft and the graphite irons use a COBRA MRC AMP CELL Shaft. All irons feature a Lamkin REL .600 grips.
