What we say...

Tech:

The Steelhead chassis is based on one of Callaway’s most popular ever golf irons, the X-14. A new 360 cup face brings the iron bang up to date and delivers greater ball speed efficiency for both on and off centre hits. A steel-infused soft urethane bar positioned behind the face absorbs vibration/improves feel and helps lower the centre of gravity. A Bore-Thru hosel saves weight which has been relocated to strategic areas to increase forgiveness.

Our verdict:

The X-14’s might have been one of Callaway’s most popular irons but head shapes have moved on dramatically since they were first introduced in 2003. We reckon if you had a set of the originals you’re much more likely to be a fan of this new model, than golfers that didn’t. There’s no getting away from the oversized heads (which increases face flex) chunky top edge and lively impact feel and sound, which no doubt some golfers will question. Our testers were spilt over how desirable the model was even though it produced an excellent overall performance. For two testers it produced a ball speed quicker than their test average which should be expected as the 7 iron loft is one of the stronger on test too.

Callaway Steelhead XR Irons

Bottom line:

An interesting iron from Callaway because of its massive nod to past models which made the brand such a dominant force in golf. Some golfers out there will love them, for us we prefer the Apex in this category. If you’re looking for ultimate forgiveness from a Callaway iron have a look at the excellent Big Bertha OS.
