Callaway X-Forged Better Player Irons Review

What we say...

The new Callaway X Forged golf irons scored very highly on rack appeal: all our testers thought these were a sexy looking set of irons that mark a real break from the Callaway tradition. They feature a Flighted CG Design for added feel, trajectory and
distance control and a Notch Back, shorter length and minimal offset suited to elite players. Performance was excellent, with sweet and responsive feedback and solid distance results. However, despite consistent praise, the X Forged failed to truly stand out in our mega test, and fell short of our awards.

2009 Review

The X-Forged are the irons in our pro’s bag, so it was no suprise when they performed well in his hands – even if he isn’t mad keen on their looks. Jon also got some impressive stats giving them full marks in the looks department. A stunning set if irons.

2010 Review:

These went down a storm, and although the X-Forged secured good dispersion ratios across our three testers, the irons might have been even higher in the rankings had TG duo Jon and Dave found a tighter ball pattern. Chris suggested the X-Forged are for really good players only and felt you’d have to be confident in your ability as they weren’t the easiest to use. But for a low single-figure handicapper, they were fantastic.

The Callaway X Forged 2009 Irons are designed to provide an elite level of performance for highly skilled golfers.

After receiving feedback straight from Tour players, Callaway Golf designers decided to refine the X-Forged Irons. The end result is precision clubs that let elite players dissect the course. Forged from soft carbon steel, the clubhead has been redesigned with more bounce and camber and a tighter sole radius.

The thin topline, narrow sole and short blade length allow for excellent workability.

The Flighted CG Design produces strong trajectories and premium distance control while the new Progressive Dual Notch Weighting allows weight to be precisely positioned for optimized performance throughout the set.

Additional bounce improves turf interaction and more camber provides greater versatility. The sole radius was tightened to add to the versatility under various playing conditions. The thin topline, narrow sole and shorter blade length combine to generate maximum workability and the White Chrome finish mutes glare.

  • 4 out of 5 Callaway X-forged

Callaway has built up a reputation to be one of the finest golf brands in golf as well as one of the most expensive, so when the X-forged irons were released I tested them to see whether they were really worth the money. After Callaway's x-20 Tour irons they embarked on the pricey x-forged irons- a set of more bladed clubs with a less 'chunky' topline. They certainly look the part, sleek better players clubs but still forgiving enough to be used by a low mid-handicapper. I tested these with the True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts and the flight of the club (6 iron) was magnficent. Powerful trajectory with distance. The lower irons also worked a treat from around 100-150 yards in with the ball landing on the green softer than with previous sets of similar irons I have hit. The longer irons once again had an impressive trajectory that the better player would like and the full cord grips are also a bonus. The one thing I would say about these irons is whether the scratch golfer or very low handicapper would appreciate the slighly thicker topline that the X-forged have and whether they would go for these over the new bladed Callaway irons that Callaway ambassador Phil Mickelson uses. Overall though, these irons are worth every penny and will ensure that you will get noticed out on the course.

I got these clubs for Christmas to replace my big bertha's wow what a club the project X shafts give a high trajectory allowing the ball to drop onto the green, the club also has an excellent feel when hitting the ball. I compared these with the Titilest 735's which I hit further but the X-forged are a more accurate club.

I love these irons, I play off 18 and they are just as fogiving as my older fusions. The feel is amazing, I have a friend who plays off 36 and he tried them the other day at the range and his comments were wow these are good. I think if you are 20 or under these irons are playable. My handicap will be coming down soon. I think the most important thing to think about when buying is the shaft. I have 5.0 and I hit the ball hard, stiffer than that will make it harder to hit the ball. The shaft has to work with you so make sure you get the right one, James
