Callaway Big Bertha Game Improvement Irons Review

Previous incarnations of Callaway’s Big Bertha irons have had at least two things in common: 1) they were probably the most easy-to-use irons in golf and 2) they were ugly as sin. Their extra-deep cavities and super-wide soles might have launched the ball into the air almost on their own, but they didn’t fit into a conventional iron shape – so Callaway settled for unconventional.

The 2004 Big berthas have moved on. Utilising the ‘Notch Weighting’ cavity designed borrowed from their X-16s, Callaway’s engineers have finally managed to incorporate the ‘old’ Big Bertha playability into a clubhead shape that won’t scare small children. Stick this set in your bag and you’re not announcing what a terrible golfer you are before you’ve even started.

More importantly, the 2004 Big Berthas are still a dream to hit. Callaway have perfected the art of perimeter weighting, to the extent these irons can turn the ugliest mishits into proper golf shits. The feel at impact is remarkably solid, the ball flight high and handsome.

With so much metal in the sole the Big Berthas have never been subtle. Mid handicappers, therefore, might have a tricky choice between these and the compact X-16s.
