Benross PT-12 Game Improvement Irons Review

It’s fair to say that Benross are known more as ‘mid-price’ than a strictly ‘budget’ golf maker. Regular readers will know that we reckon their £250+ set of irons perform just as well as many clubs twice the price.

So it was a surprise to find this ‘entry-level’ set such hard work, at least in the long irons, with both testers reporting their 3-irons ball flight to be very low and predominantly to the right, robbing even better-struck shots of distance. We reckon this may have been due to the clubs’ very thick grips inhibiting proper wrist movement through the hitting zone.

(Thick grips are sometimes used on cheaper clubs to deaden impact vibrations but they can also have an adverse effect on performance – something worth watching out for).

From the mid-irons through to the wedges, however, the PT-12s performed much better, with the wedge producing a nice, high ball flight with lots of stop – hard to fault. We also liked the uncomplicated looks and found the feel at impact to be generally good and solid.

So if you’re sensible enough to replace your long irons with utility clubs, this is a set worth considering; if you won’t consider yourself a proper golfer until you’ve hit a 3 iron 180 yards below the wind, you’ll find more helpful sets around.

Verdict: We recommend spending £50 or so extra on Benross’s truly excellent VX-51 forged irons instead.
