What we say...
Tech:
The Type R features a heat treated cup face to deliver the best spring face performance of any Benross iron. More spring means you get faster ball speeds to maximise carry distance. A progressive top line varies in width throughout the set to inspire confidence over every shot. The KBS Tour 90 or Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shaft come as standard, which Benross say delivers excellence at an affordable price.
Our verdict:
Benross are talking similar tech to Ping, Callaway and TaylorMade with heat treatments, cup faces and speed slots on the Type R. It’s only fair then to say that our data showed how it performed very similarly to the best game improvement irons on test. With a ball speed just 1mph down on the very quickest and a carry distance to rival the very best (from a strong loft) its got to be said the Type R is capable of doing a very good job on the golf course. When it comes to looks our testers didn’t love the Type R’s head shape and traditional polish finish, we did however feel it was well suited to its target audience with quite a long blade to maximise playability in what’s quite a slim line head.
Bottom line:
Seriously strong performance especially when you consider the price. Put aside the head and a KBS steel or Kuro Kage graphite shaft as standard sounds like excellent value to us.
