What we say...
Tech:
The Compressor’s heat treated cup face provides faster ball speeds from a larger area of the face to maximise distance and forgiveness. A deep undercut cavity spreads mass around the perimeter of the head to increase playability on off centre hits. KBS or Mitsubishi Kuro Kage and Golf Pride grips ensure you get a top quality product for an affordable price.
Our verdict:
If ever there was a golf club to split the opinion of our test panel the Type R is it. If picking your next set of irons was just about numbers, of faster ball speeds, how far you hit them and of course how much they cost, then many golfers shouldn’t be looking past the Type R. Unfortunately we buy with our eyes as much as we do performance and that’s where the Type R comes under scrutiny. Its head has an unusually low heel and high toe design which gives a very different appearance to most. None of our testers really felt the love for it even though the Type R produced some excellent numbers. At Simon’s slower swing speed the Type R recorded the joint fastest individual ball speed (109 mph with TaylorMade’s M1 and Ping G) while for our pro tester it delivered his joint longest average carry distance (188 yards with the Yonex Elite).
Bottom line:
The cup face and how it’s completely unsupported in the Type R is clearly doing a job. Just remember the lofts pretty strong too. As you’ve come to expect from Benross the KBS shafts and Golf Pride grips are top components that you’ll find in other top brands too.
