Joel enjoyed the Golf Pride Whiteout grip, but wasn’t sold on the matte silver finish on the KBS Tour C-Taper steel shaft. He and James really liked the headshape, classic and compact. They both felt the quality shaft boosted their performance, offering a lower flight. Kit agreed it was a fantastic-looking club that offered great feel and balance during the swing. He said the graphite shaft boosts feel and forgiveness.

It used to be that if you looked at the irons in the bag of any Tour players you’d find nothing but shiny blades to intimidate the life out of us hackers.

But these days even the best ball strikers are looking for a touch of help when competing for the game’s biggest prizes – and that has spawned a new category of more forgiving better-player irons.

The new Adams Idea CMBs are a great example. I’m a real fan of smaller heads despite my handicap but unless you are swinging well they give you next to no help.

The CMB (Cavity Muscleback) is different. The iron looks fantastic and brilliantly compact but thanks to clever use of tungsten forged into the head, they’ve got plenty of perimeter weighting as well. This means they make me feel like a proper ball striker when I have a good day but help me out on my more frequent bad ones.

That said, they don’t magically turn bad shots into good ones and still require a level of competency to get the most out of them. I’d recommend these for good single-figure players who are just looking for a bit more consistency.

The irons also feature the KBS Tour C-Taper shafts as standard which, as well as being high- quality, look fantastic with the matte grey graphite-style finish.

This club is in keeping with Adams’ impressive 2012 offering. They’ve impressed across the board – from drivers to wedges and from better-player clubs to super-game improvers.

Pros: It is a classic blade-style look with a bit of forgiveness built in.
Cons: A tad pricey and despite the help, it is definitely still for good players only.
