What we say...

Tech:

Combines a new, ultra-lightweight 9-1-1 titanium body and heavy tungsten sole. The tungsten sole holds 124g (two-thirds of the entire mass of the clubhead) to generate high launch angles and produce a low centre of gravity, making it extremely easy to hit from any lie. The new 9-1-1 titanium body is 10% lighter than 6A4v titanium.

Our verdict:

In theory titanium fairway woods are a brilliant idea. Golfers love hitting titanium drivers and the materials ability to free up weight over steel is absolutely undoubted. The only issue and the very reason they’ve never quite caught on before, is because the cost skyrockets to the same level as a titanium driver. The XJ1 because it’s made from titanium sounds brilliant. A huge percentage of the body weight is located in the sole, and between two toe and heel tungsten pads which effectively create a toe and heel weighted fairway wood. It’s super easy to launch and flight from the deck but also forgiving and great at protecting ball speed when you don’t hit the centre of the face.

Bottom line:

The XJ1 produced a ball speed just 1mph slower than the very best (TaylorMade M1 and M2), so there’s plenty of power under the bonnet. If it were available for a more reasonable price, we’d heartily recommend it to club golfers, it’s one of the easiest fairway’s to live with on the golf course.
