What we say...

Mizuno have revealed their GT180 fairway woods – a super adjustable partner to the ST180 series.

Mizuno Golf is now pushing deeper into the creation of metal woods with their new GT180 fairway woods, which Mizuno claim to be a more sophisticated capacity to manipulate weight throughout the head than the ST180 series.

The latest GT180 woods are aimed at players for fitting studios and players looking to squeeze the last few yards from their swings, whereas the the ST180 has a simple weight forward, low-spin profile, engineered to reduce spin rates.

What Mizuno call the ultimate customizable fairway wood – with ability to vastly reduce or increase spin rates as the situation dictates. An evolution of both the Mizuno Wave sole and sliding weight – reduces the lower end of spin rates for a more efficient trajectory at higher ball speeds. Also available in a TS (tour style) more compact, lower lofted head.

Bill Price, Custom Fit Manager Mizuno said: “We’ve managed to significantly reduce the lower end range of spin rates but kept the overall range of adjustability. Players with at the faster end of swing speeds are going to see a much flatter trajectory – but have the possibility of increasing their spin should the conditions dictate.”

Mizuno GT180 Fairway Wood Review: You should know

The ultimate customizable fairway wood say Mizuno. Specifically designed to reduce spin at the lower end of the scale, the GT180 gives a flatter more efficient trajectory and ball flight for higher ball speed players. There’s 17g of sliding weight in the sole and a smaller, more compact tour style 14 deg model is also available.

Mizuno GT180 Fairway Wood Review: We Say

Mizuno engineers seem to have adopted a fetish for challenging themselves to come up with the most adjustable woods on the market ever since inventing the original JPX 850 several years ago. The challenge doesn’t stop at drivers either, it runs right through to the new GT180 fairway.

Just like the ST180 the GT is a cracking looking head, it really benefits from having the blue painted crown kept a couple of millimetres back from the top line, which makes the face look bigger and more lofted. Our data suggests moving the position of the GTs 17g of sole weight can have a decent effect on ball speed and launch. Our test pro saw a gain of 4 mph of ball speed and 2.9deg less launch by pushing the weight furthest forward, which for high club speed players will create a lower penetrating flight.

Mizuno GT180 Fairway Wood Review: Verdict

If we put price aside just for a moment and look at raw data, as nice as the GT is, even on its best set up for our pro it was 4 yards down on carry distance against the very best. Factor in the £315 price tag, which makes it the most costly fairway wood we tested and you’ll soon realise, why we reckon if you want a Mizuno fairway in 2018 look at the ST180.
